"I don't doubt it." Daws grinned back. "You can be pretty resourceful, yourself."

Vance's smile lingered for a moment, then lapsed into a shrug and a sigh as he pushed his nearly-empty plate away. "I guess you'll want to get home and rest. You've done a lot of traveling today."

Daws nodded reluctantly and pushed her chair back. "Yeah . . . I suppose I should. I'll probably spend most of tomorrow helping your ex-wife get her papers in order."

"Yeah. And I'll just be here, healing." Vance raised the eyebrow over his good eye. "Any odds on Cole going over to annoy the bat tomorrow?"

Daws grinned wickedly. "I'd say the odds are pretty decent -- if not tomorrow, then probably the day after. I'll let you know how it goes once I hear anything from Cole."

"Great." Vance stubbed out his cigar, and gingerly pushed himself up from the table. "Anyway, I don't guess there's much I can do yet--but if you can use any help from Handy and the boys, call me and I'll set it up."

"I'll do that." Daws retrieved the dirty dishes and carried them to the sink. "I'll be around over the next few days, too." She grinned at him, "After all, if we're going to send Miriam back to Sid's, someone's got to try and keep an eye on you."

Vance nodded. "I'll ask her in the morning if she's ready to go back. I can get Handy or Rog to take her home..." He chuckled breathily. "And I guess Sid's place is home for her now."

"Yeah, well," Daws grinned crookedly, "Home is where the heart is, right? Sure, it's a cliche -- but they only get to be cliches because they're true."
She reached out and took one of Vance's hands in her own. "Take care of yourself, all right?"

Vance gently squeezed Daws' fingers. "I'll be just dandy--there's no trouble I can get into around here. You're the one who's gotta be careful out there."
He smiled. "Next time I'll be well enough to talk about that date."

Daws grinned faintly and ducked her head, wondering (not for the first time) if she was capable of blushing under her fur. "Somethin' to look forward to, then." She said, squeezing his hand in return before letting it drop.
"I guess I'd probably better say goodnight to the conspirators, too." She said, nodding towards the living room.

Vance nodded, and limped into the living room. Henry and Miriam were sitting on the sofa, quietly conversing, but they stood up when the Major and Daws came in.
"It's time you were getting back to bed," Miriam chided Vance gently.
Vance gave a mock-pained smile. "I feel sorta like Charles Laughton in Witness for the Prosecution. Only difference is that you're a lot nicer to look at than Elsa Lanchester."
Miriam turned pink. "Save that for Daws."
"She is too," Vance replied agreeably.

"I'd be lying if I said that flattery will get you nowhere." Daws said with a teasing grin. "But it might be worth noting that there's probably better lines than 'You look better than the Bride of Frankenstein.'"
She turned to Miriam and Henry with a smile. "I'd better be getting home -- thanks for dinner."

"Glad to have you," Miriam replied with a smile. "I guess you'll be dropping in tomorrow to make sure he's behaving..."
"That's something I wanted to ask you about, Doc," Vance put in. "I'm getting along fine, and there's not much more you can do to help me. I was wondering if you were about ready to go home to Foxy."
Henry's expression fell visibly. Miriam looked thoughtful.
"Oh. Well... I suppose, if you don't really need me anymore..."
"Not for nursing." Vance smiled. "I'll see one of the boys takes you back to Sid's tomorrow."
Then he turned to Daws, reaching out to squeeze her hand again. "I'll see you soon."

"You know it." She replied, smiling fondly at him. "Don't do anything I wouldn't."

"There's about two items on that list," Vance retorted. Then, rather surprisingly, he leaned forward and gave Daws a light peck on the cheek.
"Good night, kid."

Daws looked vaguely startled, and couldn't keep her fingers from straying to her cheek.
Oh, yeah. You definitely *can* blush under all that fur, Ace. She gave him a slow, somewhat foolish grin and nodded. "Yeah. Well, um . . . g'night."
With a final nod to Henry and Miriam, Daws retrieved her fedora and left -- still grinning.
