Miriam smiled wanly. "I wouldn't be surprised. If he has the results in time for the meeting, I can go over them then."

Daws nodded. "Okay. I'll bring it with me -- along with anything else the kid and I dig up between now and then."
She glanced at Sid. "Before I forget -- what was the Paragon called back when Rizzo owned the place?"

Sid shrugged. "Just plain 'Rizzo's'--ya expect different from a guy with an ego like his? There was a legit restaurant upstairs fer cover, but it was real small. All the action was down in the speak."

Daws grinned crookedly. "Hey, at least that'll make it easy to dig up any references to the place. I'm sure Rizzo had the papers bribed just like the cops and everyone else, but you never know what might've slipped through."

"Yeah." Sid sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Listen... in the safe in my office, I got old papers from about ten a' the past owners. Never looked at 'em, so I dunno if there's any stuff from Rizzo--an' I wouldn't bet he left anythin' as nice as a signed confession if there was. But if ya wanna look it all over, ya can drop in." He waved a hand slightly. "I don't really wanna be cartin' the papers around town. Some of 'em are pretty fragile."

Daws nodded. "Sure -- anything that could help. I'll stop in tomorrow or the day after, if that's okay."

"Sure," Sid replied with a nod. "I got some yearly insurance paperwork an' such ta deal with, so I'll be there early anyway." He smiled humorlessly. "'Sides, I like keepin' an eye on that kid Joey. Ya can never watch a kid who's datin' yer daughter too close."

Daws laughed. "I guess I can't argue with the papa-bear instinct."
She shrugged and settled her fedora on her head. "I'll give you a call when we're heading over to your place. Miriam, Henry, I guess I'll see the two of you at the meeting."

Miriam smiled and nodded. "I'll be here with Henry until Sid gets off tonight." She sobered slightly, nodding to the covered remains on the table. "I might think of something else to check, anyway, so I might as well have an opportunity to do it instead of lying awake thinking about it."
Sid glanced at Daws. "I still got time ta drop ya back at yer office, if ya want."

Daws nodded. "Sure, I'd appreciate that." She nodded to Henry and Miriam. "You two take care of yourselves."

The two said their goodbyes, and Sid walked Daws out once again to the car he had borrowed.
"I think I'll need ta brush out Marty's car 'fore I give it back," he remarked, picking at a few of Daws' hairs on the back of the passenger seat as she got in. Then he belatedly blushed. "Uh--no offense, ya know. Just so he won't ask questions."

Daws chuckled good-naturedly and shook her head. "No offense taken, Sid. After fifteen years, I'm used to it."

Sid drove in silence for several minutes.
"It bothers me a lot, ya know," he said at length, concentrating on the road. "That poor girl dyin' in the basement a' my place, forgotten all these years... Makes me wanna do somethin' about it."

Daws nodded sadly, glancing out the window. "I know. I feel the same way." She sighed and fell silent for a moment, then added "It strikes a nerve -- when something like this happens and nobody knows who's responsible. I know what it feels like to have nobody to blame."

Sid glanced over at the detective, raising an eyebrow. "Oh... your old partner, ya mean?" he asked gently.

Daws nodded. "She must've had friends, people who cared about her, maybe even a family somewhere -- and I've been in their shoes. I know it seems kind of pointless, after all this time. They're probably all dead, too, but . . . I want to solve this for their sake -- and for hers and her child's."
She shrugged and glanced ruefully at Sid. "I at least knew what happened to Jack, y'know? She must've just disappeared."

"Yeah. That's... it's rough." Sid shrugged slightly. "I think I'd feel worse too, if it was that way--with Caroline. Not knowin'."
He sighed. "I pulled down the rest a' that wall today, an' I got the basement cleaned up. I'm gonna have guys in next week ta update the pipes. But I guess I won't ever forget what was there."

"No," Daws gave him a sad, sympathetic smile, "I don't guess any of us will."
She sighed and rested her head against the back of the seat. "Anyway, we can't change what happened to her. All we can do is try and figure out what it was that did happen."

They continued on in relative silence until they reached Daws' office. Sid pulled up to the curb to let her out, then leaned over as she turned to shut the car door.
"I'll be waitin' fer you an' the kid at the Club tamorrow, if you're comin' ta look at those old papers."

Daws nodded. "We'll be there." She gave Sid's shoulder an affectionate squeeze. "Take care, Sid."
