"Yeah, she's careful like you're careful," Vance retorted. "We'll see you later, Veeru... You want to be dropped off at your office, Regina?"

Daws grinned and nodded. "It's a long walk back to my place from here."

"Yeah, and I think coping with Cole is enough exercise for anybody for one day." Vance grinned flatly. "Come on, boys."
Nate shook his head with a slight smile. "So we fight killer philanthropists and escort ladies home. Regular bunch of Boy Scouts we are."

Daws laughed brightly. "We're about the weirdest Boy Scouts there ever were. All right, let's get this troop moving, anyway."
Veeru grinned and escorted the group to the door. "Just don't let Daws try earning her knife badge, Major. She's a bit frightening around sharp things, you know."

"She has more than enough sharp things built in," Vance retorted as the door closed behind them, and grinned at Daws before she could make a comeback of her own. "Your mind included."

Daws wrinkled her nose at him affectionately. "You and that flattering streak, Jerod."

Nate chuckled and shook his head as they made their way out to the street. "Who are you and what have you done with my dad?"
"Y'mean he wasn't like that with your mother?" Handy asked interestedly.
"Uh... not exactly. Not as long as I remember, anyway." Nate darted a glance at his father. "Let's say 'cordial' is a nice diplomatic word."

Daws cleared her throat and shrugged a bit uncomfortably. "People change, I guess." She said quietly, "Some more than others."

"Or they just find out what's better for them," Vance replied, rather gently.
Nate grinned. "Hey, I'm not complaining. I was always happy--and I'm still happy. Even in the middle of all this."
"You're also nuts," Handy opined earnestly.

Daws laughed. "Sure, but we've established that. Just means he fits in with the rest of us -- including you, Handy."
She grinned crookedly at Vance. "If being happy makes you nuts, then I don't mind being called crazy."

Handy pulled a face at Daws as they climbed into the car.
"Well, I guess our plan is coming together about as well as we have any right to expect," Vance judged, inserting his key into the ignition. "Regina, do you want to get in touch with Sid about a spiderhole for Miss Cole, or shall I?"

Daws shrugged. "I can take care of it. I'll ask Sid about it and then let you know what he comes up with."

"Okay. Give me as much advance notice as you can, so I can scout the place and set up some security," Vance requested.
"And see if you can get a place with a pool," Nate added.
His father looked askance at him. "Nix. Once you and the girl are inside the house, I don't want you stepping outside until Miss Cole is in the clear--just in case Tiernan has the place watched."

Daws shrugged and grinned apologetically at Nate. "Maybe next time, huh?"

Nate sighed. "At least let it have a good library."
"You're already assuming Miss Cole won't be much for conversation," Vance pointed out, a trifle deviously. "Who knows? You might find out you have a lot in common."

Daws grinned crookedly. "Yeah, and she may be desperate to talk to someone after all those years cooped up on the estate that time forgot. Maybe you two could be penpals after this whole thing blows over."

"Um, yeah. Except we don't exactly get mail delivery at the top-secret underground resistance barracks," Nate retorted.
Vance grinned. "You could always put Handy's flock of carrier pigeons to work."
"Aw, Jerod..." Handy whined. "I haven't got those birds trained, I just feed 'em."

Daws grinned. "That's kinda sweet, Handy. Most people in the City don't even give the pigeons a second thought."

"Sure, he's soft on pigeons." Vance grinned crookedly. "All kinds."
Handy gave his leader an ungrateful look, then responded to Daws. "I've liked 'em ever since I was a kid in Father McCarty's mutant orphanage. Even with other mutant kids... well, ya know how kids are." He looked down a bit ruefully at his extra hands. "I looked funny, I was the runt, an' I couldn't do anything flashy like a lot of the others could. But the pigeons didn't mind all that."

Daws nodded thoughtfully. "They might call it the law of the jungle, but it seems to me like people follow it a lot closer than animals do."
