Cole nodded. "All right." He frowned. "I have to warn you -- I've got almost no experience trying to read someone who knows he's being read, and doesn't want to be. I'm not sure how much effort it might take."

"Who says the patsy needs ta know he's bein' read? We ain't gonna be introducin' ourselves when we got him tied down an' blindfolded--'specially since Proteus is comin' along, an' we can't exactly take the guy fer a ride with His Nibs around." Sid shrugged broadly. "Anyway, when we start with the questions, he's gotta at least think the answers even if he doesn't say 'em... right?"

Cole smiled humorlessly. "That depends on a lot of things, most of which are probably only of interest to a telepath." He shrugged. "I'll do everything I can. Given enough effort I should be able to find out what you want to know."

"Good ta hear." Sid folded his arms. "The plan is ta grab a guard from the lab, then have Proteus make like him long enough ta get the rest of us inside. So we gotta know whatever Proteus needs ta know ta do the fakin'."

"Passcodes." Cole murmured thoughtfully. "Entrances, layouts, that sort of thing."
"You got it, Mayor." Daws said. "Not to mention any little mannerisms that might help Proteus do a good job of impersonation."

"Okay, then." Sid frowned. "We dunno how the timin' of all this is gonna work. Guess we'll have ta call ya down soon as we can pick out somebody ta grab. We got some suspects, at least."
He regarded the mayor with an odd mix of distrust and grudging respect, then shrugged. "Anyway... we do 'preciate it. Your puttin' yourself through the headache an' all."

Cole smiled thinly. "To save someone else from a lot worse?" He shrugged. "I talk a pretty good game on ethics in public, but it wouldn't mean much if I didn't do something to help you all on this."
His expression darkened. "Of course you realize that if Tiernan catches wind of any of this, things will get very ugly."

"Yeah. We know." Sid shrugged fatalistically. "Tiernan ever finds out about any of us, things get ugly. But if he goes an' blows away a lab full a' scientists--or if he gets ahold a' some mutant they've been tryin' ta make inta a weapon--I don't guess things'd be much prettier."
He paused. "An' say, ya might wanna know you were right about the name. The mutant they're playin' mad doctor on really is named Ashley. Colonel Ashley--an' Major Vance knows him."

Cole's eyebrows raised in slight surprise. "I see. I suppose that's all the more incentive, then, to get him out of these . . . these 'people's' hands."

"Guess so." Sid shrugged dispassionately. "Well, even as mayor, I don't guess you'd be able ta find your way inta this kinda information--but if ya do think of any way we might be able ta learn more on what we're walkin' into, we can use it."

Cole nodded. "If I think of anything, you'll be the first to know." He spread his hands. "I suppose otherwise I'll just wait to hear from you."

"Okay--an' you can bet ya will." Sid glanced at Daws. "Anythin' else we oughta add?"

Daws pushed her hat back thoughtfully and shook her head. "No, I guess not. Just steer clear of Tiernan and be ready for when we call."
Cole nodded. "Then I suppose I'll wish the both of you luck until then."

"We're gonna need it," Sid murmured. "So long then. Guess we'll see ya down in West Virginia--maybe in a day or two."
He glanced at Daws, and they headed for the door.

Daws shook her head as she and Sid headed back towards the freight elevator that had brought them to Cole's floor. "I tell you, Sid, I'm beginning to think I'll never figure that guy out. Half the time he's doin' anything he can to make our lives difficult, the other half he goes along with us with hardly an objection."

"Beats me," Sid murmured with a shrug. "Guess the 'what if it was your sister' part got him. An' I'm not complainin'--we're still gonna have a hard enough job."

"You got that one right." Daws sighed, frowning moodily at the floor indicator light. "This is one big hornet's nest we're poking around in, my friend."

"Yeah. I..." Sid paused, and floundered for words for a long moment before shrugging and shaking his head. "I just hope we pull it off. That we all--come home okay."

Daws studied him for a long moment before sighing and shrugging deeper into her trenchcoat.
"Yeah." She said quietly, as the elevator reached the ground floor. "Yeah, me too."
