Not quite an hour after Proteus' visit to Grimalkiin, Daws and Joey arrived in the alley behind Casselton Mortuary. Daws had called ahead, and one of the mortuary staff had assured her that Henry would be quite happy to meet with her that afternoon.
Now Daws shot Joey a quick, wry smile as she rang the back doorbell. "I figure it's better not to use the front door." She explained, gesturing to the brass plaque reading Ring for Deliveries. "People tend to be a lot less eager to notice what comes in through this one."

Joey and Daws found Henry in his office, brooding over a half-inch stack of paperwork. He rose to greet them when they entered.
"Ah, good evening, Miss Dawson. Mister Falco." He gestured them to a pair of chairs facing the desk, then subsided into his own seat again, waving his hand haplessly at the papers before him. "Our paper trails outlive us these days. These forms will keep, though. What can I do for you today?"

Daws slipped off her fedora and smiled. "Well, in point of fact, Henry -- I was sort of hoping I might call on you for some help gathering intelligence."

Henry's eyebrows lifted. "Me? What on earth could I do to help you with something like that?"

Daws grinned. "It's like this," she explained. "Proteus dug up some evidence that Tiernan's planning to rob a big jewel exhibit that's gonna be showing next week at a fancy gallery.
"We're trying to find out everything we can about the gallery -- and the exhibit -- as we can, but needless to say," she chuckled, "Myself and most of Major Vance's people are not precisely the art gallery sort."

Henry glanced around at the tasteful furnishings and Egyptian artifacts of his office, then smiled crookedly. "I see your point." He paused. "But I have to tell you, I know next to nothing about jewels. Egyptology, yes--gems, no."

Daws shrugged. "The layout of the place is more what we're wanting to know. How big of a space it is, if there's any blind corners, if it's got windows, that sort of thing. And anything you might be able to notice about how stuff is displayed -- if the cases are wired for alarms, for instance."
She smiled. "It's just always a good idea to send someone in to observe a place firsthand -- particularly since Proteus has given us the caveat that we're not supposed to act unless we can do it with nobody getting hurt."

"I can see how that will be an interesting proposition." Henry nodded. "Alright then, I'll do what I can. What gallery is it?"
"The Newland Gallery," said Joey.
Henry brightened. "Oh yes. I went there about a year ago for an Egyptian exhibit. It's in an old art deco building from the twenties--very nice, but not exactly a fortress." He smiled crookedly. "They have a stained glass window above the front entrance that was made by some late, great designer, and it's worth a small fortune, as I recall. I do hope you'll try not to damage that either."

"Perish the very thought, Henry." Daws said with a mock-offended look. "We'll be as careful as we can. I'm not for damaging things that are worth fortunes -- unless, of course, they belong to Nicholas Tiernan."

"It would be better to see something destroyed than let it fall into his hands," Henry said vehemently. "When and where do you want me to report back to you?"

Daws thought for a moment. "Major Vance is gonna call me tomorrow with anything his boys are able to find." She said. "After that, we'll most likely be having a meeting at Our Lady -- Thursday or Friday, probably. You can just bring anything you find out with you -- if that'll give you enough time."

Henry nodded. "Yes, I can make time to visit the gallery tomorrow, I think. Business has been a bit slow--though of course that's nothing to complain about in my profession." He smiled ruefully. "Let me know the exact time for the meeting, and I'll be there."

"Sure thing." Daws stood and held out her hand with a grin. "Thanks for the help, Henry."

"I'm glad to do it." Henry shook Daws' hand, then Joey's. "I'll see you later. Be careful out there."
