"That must be pretty unpopular with a lot of people," Joey mused. "You think the 'mutant vote' will be enough to give him the win against people with more... well, anti-mutant opinions? Who's he getting support from that can even the score?"

Koopman clasped his hands and rested them on top of his crossed knees. "Mister Cole's views on mutant rights are, it's true, somewhat unpopular. But many people are drawn enough by his views on other issues -- his conservative approach to fiscal policy, for example -- that they're willing to overlook his stance on the so-called 'mutant issue'." He smiled primly.
"Mister Cole has also recently met with a very powerful, if somewhat . . . eccentric . . . figure, who has influence throughout the political world. We're working strenuously towards an alliance on that front."
Yeah, I'll just bet you are, anyway. Daws thought grimly. She exchanged a significant glance with Joey, Now the question is, what's Cole gonna do next?
She slapped her hands together and stood briskly. "Well, Mister Koopman, you've been a tremendous help. The Weeky Spiel thanks you for your time."
"Not at all," Koopman pumped her hand enthusiastically, "As I said, always a pleasure."
Daws managed to disengage her hand with some effort, settled her fedora lower on her head, and gestured at Joey.
"Okay, Joey, let's clear out. We hurry, we might be able to catch the Subway commisioner before he leaves for lunch."

Joey trotted after Daws, carefully tucking his notepad away in his pocket. Once they were out the door, he gave a shake of his head and a half-laugh.
"Is it just me, or was that other mutant the least weird person in the whole place?"

Daws shrugged and laughed. "Politics, I guess. Apparently you gotta be almost as crazy to work for a politician as you gotta be to vote for one."

"So what're we gonna do next?" Joey asked, taking the notepad from his pocket and looking again at the half-name that had gotten away from Koopman. "You think finding out about this doctor he started to tell us about will help?"

Daws nodded. "Yeah, that's the next move. I'll get my friend Jai -- Veeru's brother -- to cross-reference doctors with that kind of name who Cole would've been able to consult with. Tiernan mentioned that Cole only started acting cagey once he had a migraine set in; maybe he's got some sort of, I dunno, multiple personality disorder or something."
She shrugged. "If we can track down the address of the sister, I'll try going Upstate and asking her some questions, too." She glanced sideways at Joey's notepad, and grinned at the caricature of Koopman.
"Now, his ears you got just right." She remarked. "I guess I might as well head out to the Twins' place today -- you wanna come along?"

Joey grinned and shrugged. "Yeah, sure. I'd kind of like to see how Mister Patil's leg is doing. He seemed like a pretty cool guy."

Daws chuckled wryly. "Yeah, he's a pretty cool pain in my neck sometimes. I know he's not gonna stay on his crutches, and Caddy -- my doctor friend -- is gonna have my hide if he finds that out."
She shook her head and grinned. "But I do love the big lug, anyway. Okay, kid, follow me -- next stop, Jackson Heights."
