Daws opened her mouth to protest . . . but then she shut her mouth and shook her head with a wry chuckle. "Never mind. I've seen how useful it is to argue with you when you take an idea into your head." She sobered slightly. "But Doc . . . we've got no way to guarantee people aren't gonna get killed doin' this, y'know."

Miriam closed her eyes and nodded. "I know--but I'm not planning to try to fight. All I want is to see that anything we take out of the lab is properly handled. Even if I don't go into the lab itself, at least I can make sure our spoils get transported safely."

Daws nodded. "I guess I can't argue with that, Doc. It wouldn't do for us to accidentally unleash anythin' unpleasant."
She raised an eyebrow at Cole. "Suppose you'd be able to provide the address of this place -- and maybe a sketch of the layout?"
Cole nodded and reached for a pen and Daws' legal pad. "Of course."

Vance watched intently as Cole sketched the layout of the lab, occasionally asking the politician about one detail or another. When the Major was satisfied, he leaned back in his chair with a nod, folding his arms.
"It'll do. I'll need a few copies for my boys and me to go over." He raised an eyebrow at Daws. "Just name the date and time for the recon."

Daws glanced at Cole. "You say Tiernan's guys are starting their new schedule Monday?"
Cole nodded in response. "Their first eight-hour shift will start at ten a.m., the next at six p.m. and the final shift at one a.m."
Daws shrugged. "I guess Monday night is the night, then -- say about twelve-thirty. That'll give us some time to see what both night shifts look like -- get a feel for which of 'em might be the most dangerous."

"Check," Vance murmured. "I'll be there at a distance, but I'd recommend we leave the close-up spying to a few of our people with some specialized mutations. You got any good candidates?"

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "Yeah, we've got one guy with old-fashioned x-ray vision -- I can call him in. Then there's Asagi Tam. She does this sort of . . . I dunno, spirit-walking or astral projection or whatever you wanna call it. It's creepy as heck to watch -- but it might come in useful."

Vance chuckled. "Sounds like. Okay, I guess we got our first plan of attack. Let's make our rendezvous here at midnight, so we can get our people on the same page together."

Daws nodded. "I'll have the Padre spread the word to the rest of our people -- let 'em know we're tentatively on for the first part of the week." She gave a dangerous grin. "We'll just drop by first and see how Tiernan runs his little tea party -- before we decide to crash it."

"I'm looking forward to it." Vance smiled viciously and stood up, extanding his hand to Cole. "Welcome to the good fight, pal."

Cole shook Vance's hand firmly. "Thank you, Major. Here's hoping we can gain a victory."

"Count on it," Vance replied confidently. He nodded to Daws and the others, then turned and left the office.
Sid stood up with a shrug. "We gotta go pick up the kids... You want any of us ta be there for this spy mission, Daws?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "If you want. We could always use someone around who knows how to handle a gun -- y'know, if things . . . get complicated."
She raised an eyebrow at Cole and started to speak, but the politician held up one hand with a wry chuckle. "I know, I know -- I'm not invited. No hard feelings, and all of that."
Daws grinned. "Took the words right outta my mouth, Cole."
"Out of your extremely loud thoughts, rather." He remarked dryly. Then he turned to the others. "It's been a pleasure to meet all of you," he said, extending his hand. "I wish you all the very best of luck."

Handshakes were exchanged, and then Sid nodded to Daws. "Okay, I'll be there--but not Foxy," he added peremptorily, raising a hand before his friend could protest. "Everybody's gettin' used ta my not showin' up at the Club half the time, but when our star attraction don't show, they riot."
Alex shrugged haplessly. "As long as Miriam stays home too..."
"Then it's settled," Sid declared before Miriam could object. "I'll see ya then, Daws."
With that, he herded his companions out of the office.

Daws grinned and shook her head. "Almost as loud as me, huh?"
Cole raised an eyebrow at her. "Almost."
She laughed and held out her hand. "Welcome to the fight, Cole. You're gonna haveta put up with a lot worse than my loud thinkin' before it's over."
"No doubt." The politician shook her hand and turned for the door. "Let me know how things work out."
"I will." She watched him depart, then chuckled dryly.
Well, at leas things stay interesting around here.
