"So long as you're careful," Daws admonished, "And don't get noticed."
She tugged a half-ripped manila folder out of her box -- grimacing as the contents almost spilled out -- and thumbed cautiously through it. "You got anything there for a Roger Hubbard?"

Joey blinked and rifled through his box. "Uh... yeah." He lifted a folder and held it out to Daws. "Here, I--uhm." His remark was cut short when the edge of something lacy and silky trailed out of the folder.
He snatched his hand back quickly when Daws took the folder from him. "I don't wanna know!"

Daws laughed and peeked cautiously into the folder, then rolled her eyes and set both folders quickly aside.
"That would've been a bit of Jack's handiwork." She remarked with fond exasperation. "I strictly avoid any kind of case that's gonna have evidence like that involved, myself."

"Just as long as that didn't actually belong to him," Joey replied with a grin.

Daws grinned and shook her head. "Nah, Jack's tastes ran more towards wrinkled dress shirts and suits that looked like he'd slept in 'em."
She plucked a few battered photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge out of her box and held them up with a puzzled frown. "Now what d'you suppose these were for?"

Joey grinned. "Maybe somebody was using them to try to sell it."
Proteus chuckled, quietly but abruptly.

Daws laughed. "Wouldn't surprise me. I've known weirder."
She shrugged and set the photos to one side. "Well, maybe we'll figure out what they go to later."

After a few hours, Daws and Joey came to a stopping point in their filing work. Proteus, who had been watching them intently and for the most part silently, stirred from his half-sprawl in a chair and sat up.
"If you two are hungry, we could go out for lunch. I'll buy." The shapeshifter smiled at Joey's surprised look. "Yes, I do eat like anyone else--and yes, I even have money. Well, a little."

Daws smiled and stood, stretching. "Hey, far be it from me to pass up an offer of lunch.
"There's a diner not too far away." She added, ducking into the office to retrieve her coat and fedora.

Joey mock-winced and grinned at Proteus. "I better warn you, Daws is of the 'eat at Joe's' philosophy of dining out."
Proteus smiled. "I don't mind. The Spooks aren't exactly picky eaters, either."

"Hey," Daws re-emerged from the inner office, grinning as she shrugged into her coat, "I blame spending most of my early adulthood tagging along after a guy who lived off cigars and adrenaline. With Jack around it was always better to eat when you could, where you could -- no way of tellin' when he'd slow down enough to eat again."

"Sounds like quite a character," Proteus remarked, following Daws and Joey out of the office. "Myself, I'm not one for being in a hurry to do anything."

Daws grinned as they turned out onto the street. "Yeah, well -- you do have a lot more time than most people I know, too."

Proteus looked momentarily solemn. "It's not what it's cracked up to be, Miss Dawson."
He abruptly turned to Joey, changing the subject. "Time for some of those questions. You have family, boy?"
Joey shrugged. "Like I said... my dad left. But I've got my mom. I still go over to Brooklyn to see her a couple times a week, and I stay the night with her sometimes. I was giving her money, but she won't take it anymore, now that she's got a job as a secretary."

"She got the job, huh? You told me she was takin' those classes." Daws smiled and nodded in approval. "Glad to hear they paid off."

"Yeah, she's doing pretty good now," Joey nodded.
"Glad to hear that. It was good of you to help her out." Proteus paused. "I take it she isn't a mutant."
Joey shook his head, and the shapeshifter added, "Well, nobody's perfect."

Daws laughed. "Now, most folks would've had that reaction if she was one of us."
They had reached Marco's diner; Daws shouldered the door open and gestured the other two inside. "I guess it's all just a matter of perspective."

"I don't have much use for norms," Proteus admitted, as they sat down at a corner booth. "Oh, I've got no ill will toward 'em, but they just aren't interesting--except maybe that friend of yours who owns the nightclub. That gloomy-looking Englishman, though..." He shook his head and smiled wryly. "Too much of a typical human for my tastes."

Daws smiled faintly. "I never have met a 'typical' human." She said good-naturedly. "Oh, maybe they can't fly or set fire to anythin' with their minds -- but there's still just as much difference in them as there is in us."
She grinned. "Then again, I do tend to deal mostly with the weirder end of humanity."

"I could tell that from those case files you were going through," Proteus remarked with a grin.
After the waitress came and went, the shapeshifter turned to Joey. "So tell me about yourself. What you do when you're not sorting files or playing fetch for Nocturne."
"Oh." Joey shrugged. "You know... I just hang out. I watch TV, go to a movie sometimes. On Saturdays, and sometimes during the week, I play sports at Our Lady of Refuge."
Proteus glanced at Daws. "That's the church a lot of mutants go to, isn't it?"
