Character's Name: James Marcus Cole
Mutant Nickname: Marcus to his family and close friends
Mutant Power(s): telepathy
Occupation: Mayoral Candidate
Gender: Male
Age: 43
Height: 6’
Hair Color: Blond
Eye Color: Blue
Physical Description: Very good-looking (he seems much younger than his age), slender and athletic, always well-groomed and carefully dressed.
Country/Hometown: Los Angeles, CA/Upstate New York
Immediate Family: Father, James Cole Sr. and Mother, Amanda Tobias – retired film actors; one sister, Marla
Personality: Even-tempered and charming, Marcus comes across on first acquaintance as somewhat too naive to have any potential in politics. Beneath the laid-back social persona, however, is a canny thinker with a great deal of political savvy. Despite his time in the political arena, he has retained his honesty (due at least partly to his awareness of what it’s like inside the mind of a dishonest politician).
Weaknesses: the strength of Marcus’s ability to discern the thoughts of others is dependent upon the length of time he spends around them and their physical proximity to him: physical contact increases his effectiveness, while emotional or physical fatigue decreases it. Using his ability to actively seek information from another’s mind is extremely taxing for him and usually triggers his migraines. Like most telepaths, Marcus finds his ability is almost useless in crowds.
Additional (Non-Mutation) Skills: A close knowledge of political process, excellent athletic condition, and an array of contacts throughout the City’s political system.
Hobbies/Interests: Art, horseback riding, sailing
Personal History: Born to a married couple of mid-list actors in the waning years of Hollywood’s golden age, James Marcus Cole led a privileged childhood and adolescence. The family, which also included Marcus’s younger sister Marla, split their time between Los Angeles and an estate in Upstate New York. Marcus’ mutant abilities first manifested when he was sixteen, after a year of enduring almost constant and crippling migraine headaches (from which he still occasionally suffers). The next year his sister also developed a mutation; however, while Marcus’s ability left him with a normal human appearance, Marla was not as fortunate. In addition to telepathy (milder than her brother’s), the young woman developed pale-blue skin and white hair: always shy, Marla has lived for more than two decades as a semi-recluse on the family’s property in Upstate New York.
The prejudicial treatment to which his sister became prey deeply impacted the young Marcus, and he remains devoted to the cause of mutant civil rights. Despite his parents’ attempts to nudge him into an acting career, Marcus instead took an interest in politics. He earned a degree in political science from an Ivy League school and has held several offices over the years, culminating in two terms as deputy mayor of Albany. After stepping down from that position four years ago, Marcus has had his sights set on the Big Office in Manhattan – a position which pundits generally agree he has at least a moderate chance of winning if he plays his cards right.
While his parents, sister, and a few exceptionally close friends are aware of his mutation, for the most part Marcus remains unexposed as a mutant.
