Daws nodded. "Yep, that'd do it, too."
She thumbed through the paper in front of here and skimmed over the brief article. "Says here Rizzo's Place was reopened after a brief closure for 'cleaning'." She snorted quietly. "Which could mean anything from 'moving in a new case of hooch' to 'rebuilding from the latest barfight' to 'disposing of the evidence'."

"Ugh. I used to hear about that going on at Lusus Naturae, for all of the above."
Joey's eyes darkened. "The rooms upstairs, you know, where--certain kinds of business went on--well, that was where Tiernan used to... do the worst things."

Daws' expression darkened. "That man's got an awful lot he's gonna answer for one of these days." She growled quietly. "And your having to know anything about that sorta thing is pretty high on the list, if you ask me."

"I never saw any of it," Joey assured Daws, somewhat quickly. "I mean, I just heard about it. From the other guys down in the bunker, who, uh--did the cleaning up." He grimaced. "They'd joke about it."

"Charming. Tiernan knows how to pick 'em." Daws' expression lightened somewhat and she turned back to leafing through newspapers. "Anyway, this article doesn't say anything more about why Rizzo's Place was closed -- even though the editor probably knew that 'cleaning' was just an excuse. I'm sure Rizzo and Stiglione both made sure the press were pretty well greased."

"Yeah, just like Tiernan." Joey frowned. "There was a reporter a few years ago who didn't buy it, and tried digging a little too deep into what he really does. She had a--car accident. Or so the story went."

Daws shivered. "I'm lucky -- if things had played out just a little different, that could've been me."
She lapsed into thoughtful silence and leafed through the next few newspapers in her stack. At length she sighed and shook her head. "Looks like most of these reporters knew better than to wind up that way -- nothing here is telling me anything we don't already know."

"I haven't seen anything else that looks important, either," Joey agreed. "I've got two papers left to check here. Anything else we need to look up?"

Daws shook her head. "Nope, not here anyway. Next up is seeing what Sid might have stowed away in the safe at the Paragon."

"Great." Joey quickened his search through the last two papers, and paused on the last one. "Huh. Some things never change... Here's an article about Rizzo's Place serving free soup to homeless people twice a month."

Daws chuckled dryly. "Something tells me those two would've gotten along swimmingly. Aside from Rizzo bein' human, I mean." She pushed back from the table and gingerly retrieved her armload of papers. "Sharks know their own kind."

"Eh. Funny thing is, Tiernan doesn't mind letting a few human mobs keep running around the city." Joey followed Daws' lead, picking up his papers to be put away. "I guess it keeps the cops busy with non-mutant problems or something. But any mutant criminals that turn up--he either gets 'em under his thumb or gets rid of them. I guess he doesn't want mutant crime to be exposed until he's ready to blow everything up himself."

Daws nodded. "Probably thinks the human mobs aren't worth wasting his time on yet." Her expression darkened. "After all -- if he gets his way, humans in general will be done for."
She pushed one of the newspaper drawers shut with a firm motion, the noise sounding overly loud in the quiet archives. "Good thing he's not gonna get his way."

Joey grinned wanly. "I'm glad some people care enough to make sure of that."
He busied himself putting his own newspapers away, then dusted off his hands and turned back to Daws. "Okay then. Off to the Paragon Club?"

Daws nodded and retrieved her fedora. "Yep." She shot an insolent grin at the archivist as she led the way back upstairs and out of the library.
"Sid says he's not really sure what-all's in his safe," Daws explained, "Just a bunch of stuff from all the previous owners. I'm hoping we'll dig up something more on this Doctor Pendergast, even if it's just a snapshot or a bill for services rendered or something."

"Seems more like we'd find something on Rizzo, if there's anything important in the safe at all," Joey mused, following Daws out of the library. "What I kinda wonder is--how can you own a place as long as Mr. Rosenstein has, and not bother looking at the junk the last owners left behind?"

Daws shrugged thoughtfully. "Considering who the previous owners were, I can't entirely blame Sid for putting off going through their castoffs. You never know when you'll run across a skeleton in the closet." She winced immediately after the words left her mouth and added quietly, "And sometimes, unfortunately, it's literal."

Joey made a face. "Sorta takes the romance out of having an old building--wondering what's in the walls."
He looked thoughtful. "There's parts of the Bunker that trail off into old abandoned subway tunnels. Really creepy. Once or twice I thought about exploring 'em, but I'd get to the edge and look into the dark and chicken out. Besides... I don't know if Tiernan might've ever used 'em for something."

Daws pulled a face. "Yeah, I don't blame you. Even if Tiernan didn't hide anything awful down there, the old tunnels are still nothin' to mess around with -- holes in the floor, loose wires," She grinned wickedly, "Alligators."

Joey gave a snort. "Alligators... Yeah, right. Another one of your cold cases?"
