"That's too bad. We could use a way to tell if he's lying or not." She sighed. "Like you said, we'll have to watch him pretty close from now on. If he's dumb enough to play into Tiernan's hands on purpose there's no telling what he's dumb enough to do."

"It was obviously no time to prod him about trying to dig up any useful information." Vance folded his arms and grimaced. "Now I don't think I'd trust him with any useful information. Which leaves us more in the dark than ever about where to hit Tiernan next."
He paused, smiling humorlessly. "Personally, regardless of the Padre's feelings about urban renewal, I'd be tempted to make a few good old-fashioned raids on the bat's warehouses and munitions stockpiles. But after the Murfeeston bridge, I don't expect much support on things like that from the civilian contingent."

"Padre or no Padre, some of 'em are getting restless enough that they might actually go along with that." Daws replied. She frowned. "Anyway, we've gotta come up with something. I don't worry about your boys so much, but I'm afraid too much inaction is gonna make some of mine forget what they got into this for."

"I'll find out if my mole can come up with any run-of-the-mill shipment schedules or security rotations," Vance mused. "Something to fall back on if nothing else turns up soon."

"It'd be better than nothing." Daws grinned crookedly. "Wouldn't want to get out of practice. "

"You planning on being around when Sid and the Padre interview those Spooks Proteus referred us to?" Vance asked Daws. "I don't know about you, but I'm sort of interested in being in on their screening, for security reasons."

"Yeah, I figured I would. If nothin' else, I'd like to get a feel for the sort of people they are." Daws shrugged as the elevator came to a halt at the ground floor. "And even regular casework's been slow lately, so I've got some time on my hands."

Vance grinned crookedly. "If you get bored, you can come along with my people to collect involuntary donations from drug dealers. Not exactly as glamorous as fighting to defend the human race, but it keeps groceries on the table."

Daws snickered. "You certainly do know how to offer a girl a good time, Vance. How could I refuse?"

The Major chuckled. "In that case, I'll let you know the next time we're going on one of our little Robin Hood missions."
"Will you let me come this time?" Nate asked hopefully.
His father glanced frowningly at him. "I'll think about it."
Nate gave Daws a beleaguered look. "You see he's still being overprotective."

"I never would've noticed." Daws chuckled. "Give it some time. When things get hectic again you'll appreciate the break."

"Handy's getting a kick out of it," Vance put in. "He's been delighted to point out that I'm just getting put through the same worry he's had over me all this time."
Handy grinned. "I think it's about time Jerod knew what it feels like."

"I won't argue with that." Daws grinned wickedly at Vance. "Anything that causes you a little healthy mental aggravation is okay in my book."

Nate grinned and shook his head. "Can I say I'm just loving watching what you two seem to have going?"
"You oughta've seen 'em go at it at first," Handy retorted. "Daws used to threaten to hurt your dad pretty much every time she saw him."
Vance snorted, his lips twitching. "She still does."

Daws wrinkled her nose at Vance and cuffed him playfully on the shoulder. "Hey, if you hadn't insisted on being so . . . well, so you, I never would've started makin' threats."
She grinned at Nate. "Takes me a while to warm up to stubborn hotheads, you see. Probably because I am one."

By this time they had reached Vance's car, and the Major scanned the area with instinctive caution before unlocking the doors.
"Nate's more even-tempered," he remarked, watching the others get in before he slid behind the wheel himself. "I don't know where he got it--not from me or his mother."

Daws laughed. "Maybe you canceled each other out."
She shrugged and glanced inquisitively at Vance. "Hey, out of curiosity -- and now that I can't broadcast it to Cole -- what did those 'precautions' of yours entail, anyway?"

Vance grinned harshly. "It's too dark now for you to see 'em, and they're headed home now anyway--but I had two dozen of my people posted around the block. If things had really gotten ugly, my cue was to lob a boomer straight through Cole's window. Then..." He let out a humorless chuckle. "Well, things would've gotten even uglier. But if Cole had flipped on us... If he'd become a danger to people like you and Sid who are still operating in the open..."
He shrugged fatalistically. "I was ready to do what was necessary."

"Then it really is a good thing that it didn't go that far." Daws grimaced. "Not that the trouble we've got on our hands isn't great enough by itself -- but having to tear up the mayor's apartment would've been a whole extra kind of trouble."

The beauty of it was that nothing public could have come of it," Vance mused. "If we'd had to--do something, Tiernan himself would have been forced to hush it up. Even he isn't prepared for an all-out human uprising against mutants. But like you say, I'm glad it didn't come to that--yet."
"You really think we have to be afraid the Mayor might partner up with Tiernan?" Nate asked.
Vance's fingers tightened on the steering wheel. "You heard him. He puts his sister's welfare above everything else. If Tiernan ever managed to sway him around to the idea that she'd be better off with mutants in charge..." He grimaced.
