Henry winced, and chuckled without humor. "Oh yes--Henry Casselton, caretaker to the dead. Only another reason why Miriam should be kept away from me."

"No." Daws said firmly. She turned slightly in her seat and fixed Henry in a stern gray gaze.
"Now listen. I know how frustrated you must be, feeling like there's nothing you can do -- heck, half the time I feel like I'm powerless to do anything useful to bring Tiernan down, and I'm in it as deep as anyone is. But you're dead wrong if you think for a minute that it'd be better for any of us -- especially for Miriam -- if you just stay away."
The detective's voice softened. "From what Miriam's told me, you were the only friend she had, the only one she could trust, for an awful long time. Maybe she's found some others since then -- but that doesn't change the fact that you were there first. She cares an awful lot about you."
She sighed. "Look, I'm probably the most emotionally clueless person in the world, Henry. I know next to nothin' about dealing with feelings, my own or other people's. But even I can tell that it'd break Miriam's heart to lose you."

Henry was silent for a long moment, looking decidedly unconvinced. At last he sighed and said, "Thank you, Daws."
A few minutes later, after some directions from Daws, Henry pulled his car up in front of her apartment. He turned to Daws with a shrug.
"Call me, of course, if there's anything I can do. Anything at all."

"I will, Henry. I mean that." Daws shook the undertaker's hand with a faint smile. "Take care of yourself, Henry. Be careful out there."
