"You said it." Daws scowled. "About ten minutes after they found it they'd be 'suggesting' we all line up for regular injections -- willing or unwilling."

"What I don't understand," said Roger, spooning soup into his bowl, "is what the bat of all people was doing cooking up that stuff. I mean, the last thing he wants is to see the norms getting their hands on something like that."
"It's a weapon to use against mutants who don't see things his way--with us at the top of the list." Vance frowned and jabbed his fork at the piece of cornbread Roger had brought from the kitchen. "And make no mistake, he's going to try. He'll have plenty more where the batch we stole came from."

Daws stirred her soup and glanced thoughtfully at her hand. "Don't know what good it'd do him in my case. Hubert said the stuff wouldn't work on physical mutants -- not that you'll hear me complaining."

"Big trouble for guys like me and Rog, though," Vance observed. "I don't know whether--hey!"
While he was speaking, Roger had suddenly shot up from the table--nearly tipping over his bowl--and made a dive for the cordless phone six feet away. He dialed frantically and put it to his ear with a wildly anxious expression.
"What goes?" Vance asked loudly.
Roger waved a hand to quiet him, explaining tersely, "They're givin' away Nuclear Postmen tickets on the radio."
Vance sighed and gave Daws a longsuffering smile. "You'd think I'd be used to it by now."

Daws snickered. "Some things you never quite get used to, I suppose. Like friends of yours responding to radio signals only they can hear."

"You'd think we would have, but we haven't yet had a situation where that turned out tactically useful." Vance shook his head. "Instead it nearly got him killed a few times in Somalia. That's how I found out he was a mutant. I hadn't manifested yet... but I'm glad to say I was open-minded about it. Another CO would've busted him from the service."

"Like too many other people." Daws replied, giving Vance a quick sympathetic glance. "Well, maybe one of these days Tiernan'll start broadcasting evil plans over his own private network of secret radios. Wouldn't that be convenient?"

Vance let out a short laugh. "Sorry. Overcome by the mental image."
Behind him, Roger uttered a whoop.
"Guess he got his tickets," Vance observed, and rested his chin on his hand. "Now would somebody mind telling me what 'Nuclear Postmen' are?"

Daws spread her hands with a slight shrug. "If I had to guess? Probably one of those bands that I can't listen to with this hearing." She gestured to her pointed ears with a grin. "It's all so much noise to me."

"Eh. I'm partial to Genesis, myself." Vance thoughtfully chewed a chunk of cornbread. "I tried going to a coupla rock concerts with Nate, several years ago. I guess I'm just a fogie when it comes to music... but the weird thing I found out is that the kids with mohawks and tattoos had better manners than the clean-cut young preppies."
He half-smiled ruefully. "Almost reminds me of the folks in the Padre's flock. I guess some of the people who choose to be freaks aren't much different from those of us who were made that way."

Daws nodded in agreement. "I know what you mean. The fringe is the fringe, I guess -- no matter how you end up on it."

"Well, I don't know about that." Vance frowned thoughtfully. "Tiernan and his people are as much 'fringe' as we are--but I think we both agree there's a world of difference. It's just a question of good and evil, I guess."

Daws nodded. "Not just whether you're on the fringe or not -- but what you choose to do once you're on it. And whether or not you choose to hate everyone else because you ended up there."

"Sometimes it's a matter of what you can do." Vance sighed. "So... other than eavesdropping at Cole's election party and trying to keep Sid from snapping when he goes to sign some papers... you know of anything else on the agenda?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "If things stay relatively calm on the Tiernan front, I'm going to see about tracking down Hubert's son for him. I didn't have much of a chance to before things got hectic with the Spooks."

"That'll be interesting." Vance dabbed his cornbread into his soup. "As for me, far as jobs that don't have to do with bothering Tiernan go... my gang's finances could use replenishing. It's about time we knocked over a pimp or a drug dealer. You oughta come along sometime--I'm sure it'd be plenty educational for a detective."
He grinned and shook his head. "Some Robin Hood I make."

Daws grinned at him affectionately. "Oh, I think you do all right. Maybe not so much with the swinging in from the tree branches -- but you've got the principles, anyway."

Daws burst out laughing and rested her forehead on her hand. "Oh, thanks, Vance. That was a mental image I really needed running around in my head."

The Major smirked. "Hey, there could be weirder casting. I've heard that back in old Hollywood, they considered Cagney before Errol Flynn."
