Daws laughed. "It'd make a great act." Then she grinned slyly. "Lucky you'll never have to play the part in real life, huh?" She winked at Miriam over her shoulder.

Miriam blushed, but Alex only grinned and sidled toward her.
"Oh, you haven't seen the way she keeps house, Daws--and Sid's place is great practice for it." With a playful grin, he reached out to put an arm around her. "Isn't that true, sweetness?"
Miriam made an alarmed noise and squirmed away from him. "Your hands are greasy!"

Daws grinned and shook her head. "Ah . . . true love. Ain't it grand?"

"For a lady who spent her career cutting people open, she's awfully squeamish about chicken guts," Vance put in mildly.
"We're in a kitchen, not a morgue." Miriam put her hands on her hips, looking defiant--but with just enough trace of a sparkle in her eyes to prove that even she enjoyed the banter.
Alex shrugged and moved back to his cutting board. "At least I don't blow things up."
"I got seven receipts fer new microwaves that'd like ta argue that point," Sid retorted, raising an eyebrow.

"Seven?" Daws shot Alex an incredulous look. "Okay, see, I could understand two or maybe even three microwaves. But seven is pushing it just a little, doncha think?"

Alex winced. "That second to last one was not my fault."
"He told one of the chorus girls she could microwave a cold hamburger," Grace supplied to Daws and Vance, almost as an aside. "But, see, Sadie's not real bright... and he didn't think about telling her to take the foil wrapper off."

Daws grimaced. "Yeah . . . that'd do it, all right. Although I'd still like to know exactly what happened to the other six."
She shrugged and gestured to the pile of peeled carrots in front of her. "Okay -- so should I chop these now, or what?"

Alex nodded broadly. "Yeah--just don't chop them too fine. This is supposed to be a hearty soup."
Still peeling potatoes, Sid refused to let the previous subject go quite yet. "One'a the microwaves was a casualty a' the Great Molasses Catastrophe last year. Foxy was tryin' ta cook some kinda maple-caramel-fudge-taffy thing." He grinned. "Ever seen The Blob? I thought that stuff was gonna roll outta the kitchen an' start eating the customers."

Daws grinned. "Well, it's comforting to know that even Alex occasionally has something he's cooking take on a life of its own. Gives me a sort of hopeful feeling, y'know?"

"Well hey, you only learn by trying new things," Alex put in--and then he shifted with slight discomfort. "And sometimes you make some big mistakes in the process."

Daws raised an eyebrow. "Destroying seven microwaves and creating radioactive goop monsters in the process? Yep -- I'd guess that those probably qualify as big mistakes."

"Well, I approve of your outlook, anyway," Vance remarked to Alex. "I've made some pretty big mistakes myself--but I'd like to think I've come out better for 'em on the whole. Although..." He grinned at Daws. "The lady might disagree."

Daws wrinkled her nose affectionately at him. "You've got your moments. Granted -- some of 'em are exasperating moments. But hey,"
She shrugged one shoulder philosophically, "Jack always used to say that we wouldn't love people half as much if they didn't exasperate us once in a while. Said it helps remind us how good we've got it the rest of the time."

Daws grinned over her shoulder at him. "You would've. He would've liked you, too." She chuckled wickedly. "Of course, first he would've pulled his whole gruff, blustery, overprotective act on you -- but you two would've been swapping Army stories before too long."

Sid grinned. "Now we're startin' ta get the picture why you're soft on this guy."
Vance straightened his spine with mock dignity, and there was a hint of mischief in his scarred face. "She just goes for the uniform. We all still wear it on the inside, even after we're out of the Service."

"That's the truth." Daws grinned at him, her eyes sparkling. "And you don't look so shabby wearin' it on the outside either, y'know."

Vance grinned. "Well, it doesn't have the medals I picked up before I turned, but at least the insignia are right. I cobbled that one together from Army surplus stores and old connections like Rog. I don't exactly have any of my own old souvenirs of Army life... except for this." He pointed vaguely to his face.

Daws smiled ruefully and turned back to the carrots she was chopping. "I know a lot of people who only have scars for souvenirs. I guess it comes with the territory."

"Better on the outside than the inside." Vance thoughtfully flicked a piece of potato peel from his knife. "I've seen too many like that--both as a soldier and a mutant. There but for the grace of God..."
