Daws sighed and shook her head. "That man's gonna get himself killed someday. It's only a tossup whether it'll be an angry boyfriend that does it -- or if he'll mouth off to the wrong mutant at the wrong time."

"I'd say his liver's gonna give out first," Sid replied morosely.
Handy perked up. "Taking bets? I'll hold the money."

Daws rolled her eyes. "C'mon, Handy. I don't think any of us are quite that easy to fool. You can't sweet-talk us like you do Gracie, either." She added with a grin.

Vance grinned. "In Handy's defense, he pays it back. Just think of it as a temporary loan."
"Why does everybody pick on me just 'cause I offer to do something?" Handy lamented.

Daws chuckled dryly and shook her head. "It's not the offering, Handy." She remarked. "It's that particular tone of voice and the gleam you get in your eye when you're doing the offering."

Handy shook his head and looked at Vance. "I don't get it."
"I'll tell you when you grow up," the Major chuckled.

Daws laughed. "The question is sort of academic -- I don't bet on dead pools or politics, anyway." She remarked. "Too morbid for my tastes either way."

Vance frowned thoughtfully. "Speaking of politics, anything new with our supposed friend in high places?"

Daws reached for another onion. "Not a lot. He's willing to break into that fund he's collected if we need any money for our little project. Other than that . . ."
She shrugged one shoulder as she peeled the onion. "The election's on Tuesday, and he's still doing decent in the polls. It's gonna be close, but I think he's going to win." She grimaced faintly. "Which could be good or bad, dependin' on exactly what his . . . backers expect in return for the support they've been giving him."

"Oh, boy. That's gonna be... something else." Vance gave Sid a quick glance, but he did not voice his thoughts for the sake of both Tara and her father. That might be one more catch in this Lusus Naturae business, making sure the bat doesn't try to rope in our entrepreneur here the hard way as one of those "backers"... of Cole or anything else.
He looked at Daws with a very slight shrug, the brow above his blind eye rising a fraction.

Daws gave a faint half-smile and a slight nod of agreement at the unspoken thought, then shrugged and tossed a section of onion peel at the trashcan. "Hey, at least if he gets elected that's a couple more years of not worryin' about a registration act."

"I've never really thought that'd ever go through," Vance said thoughtfully, rubbing his thumb across the edge of the knife blade in his hand. "It's a pretty foregone conclusion that if it did, the... less diplomatic contingent on our side would take some pretty nasty action. I don't think any politician is ready to uncork that evil genie--at least not yet."
Not as long as they don't know any mutants like Nocturne are itching to start that war anyway.

Daws nodded. "I think you're probably right. I hope you are, anyhow. Some days, though . . ." she trailed off with a shrug. "Well, no sense borrowing that particular kind of trouble, I guess."

Alex had been busy tending several pots at the bank of stove burners. Now he tossed a handful of bay leaves into them, and turned to grin at Daws, Vance, and Handy.
"You guys are lucky you're not getting timed. You wouldn't make it in the restaurant business."

Daws rolled her eyes good-naturedly at Alex. "Hey, you can't complain too much about free help, y'know. Besides, you wouldn't want one of us to cause some sort of mishap from rushing, wouldja?"

"And they would," Miriam remarked with a grin.
Tara smiled and affectionately nudged Alex's shoulder with her head. "He's a tough teacher--and I know because he's been teaching me how to cook." She sobered just slightly. "Now that I'm off the swim team, I've been looking for new hobbies."

Daws gave the teenager a sympathetic smile. "I could teach you how to play chess if you want. I still sorta owe you for teaching me to swim, after all."

Tara grinned. "Thanks. I think I'd like that sometime."
Handy got that familiar solicitous look, and opened his mouth--then closed it again when Vance looked at him.

Daws nodded. "It's a deal, then. Gimme a couple months, and you'll be good enough to give Vance a run for his money." She shot a grin at Vance. "Speaking of which -- you still owe me a rematch."

"Any time," said Vance with a smile. "It's been a while since I've played with a good opponent."
