Daws grinned at her. "We'll try to keep things relatively intact when we clash. Well . . . I'll try, anyhow."

Busy tending his pots, Alex grinned and shook his head. "Well, the Spooks might get dinner tomorrow night, at this rate."
"Ya wouldn't think this guy's got a punctual streak, wouldja?" Sid asided teasingly to the others.

"Nah, he's not tryin' to drop a hint or anything." Daws replied, rolling her eyes good-naturedly and turning back to her recipe sheet. "I mean, we'd know it if he was tryin' to drop a hint, right?"

Alex grinned sheepishly and shrugged. "I don't like to let people go hungry. We both know what that's like, Daws."

Daws sobered slightly and nodded. "Yeah. You've got a good point there."

"I haven't heard much about the early years of Foxy Malone," Vance murmured. "'Cept I've got the idea you came up from pretty much the bottom."
Alex set down his large wooden spoon and shrugged, somewhat ruefully. "Same story as a lot of others, I guess. Went mutie after my parents died, ran away from a foster home, ended up doing my voice tricks on the street. I worked my way up through carnivals and cheap clubs--until I met Sid." He smiled at his benefactor.

Daws smiled as she stirred at her pot. "How'd you two meet, anyway? I don't think I ever heard that part of the story."

Sid grinned nostalgically, and patted Tara's shoulder. "Actually, ya might say Tara found him. Me an' Caroline took the kids ta Coney Island one day--Caleb wasn't born yet, so it was just the girls. Well, there we were, just out ta have a good time--an' there was this half-starved kid doin' a cheap ventriloquist act fer pennies."
Alex put his face in his hand. "Don't remind me of that act."
His friend went on. "Well, I know talent when I see it. After he wrapped up the act, I caught up with him an' interduced myself, an' asked him ta show me what else he could do. You can just imagine how that went--so what else could I do? I hired him on the spot."
The entertainer grinned at Sid. "That handshake is the only contract we've ever had."
"Back then I didn't even know how he did what he did," Sid reflected. "That came out later, an' then... well, you guys know about where my folks came from. I had a feelin' fer the spot he was in."

Daws smiled. "You really are a good guy, Sid. You know that, right?"

Sid ducked his head, blushing to the tips of his jug ears, and Tara put her arm around his ribs and squeezed him. "Maybe he doesn't know it, but I do."

"It's not hard to notice." Daws remarked, grinning at Sid's blush. Then she turned back to her pot and frowned thoughtfully at the contents.
"Why does this seem like it's missing something?"

"Well, it still needs seasoning," Alex put in, pointing to an array of spices lined up on the counter. "Dill, pepper, garlic salt, bay leaves..."

"Ah, yeah. That probably would help." Daws made a wry face and reached for the spices and the measuring spoons. "Not that hot, chicken-flavored water with veggies in it wouldn't be nice, too . . ."

Alex chortled and made a face.
"Don't worry, Daws," Miriam said encouragingly. "His first efforts at teaching me to cook went about the same way. I didn't learn how to boil rice right off, but we ended up with some pretty useful glue."

Daws chuckled and shook her head. "You should've seen the one and only time I tried baking. As it turns out, when a recipe uses a lowercase t, it's calling for a teaspoon of baking soda. Not a tablespoon."
She grimaced and gestured broadly. "The kitchen of Jack's apartment looked like Revenge of the Bread or something. He laughed himself sick."

"It's not much fun, though," Tara said with a slight pout. "Especially not... now."
Vance gazed at her with a gruff sort of sympathy. "Scared of other kids or your teachers finding out what you are, huh?"
Her gaze downcast, Tara nodded unhappily.

Daws frowned sympathetically. "I'm sorry, Tara. Kids -- well, just people in general -- can be cruel and stupid enough without that."

"I asked her if she wants a private tutor," Sid remarked. "She says no. Says she figures it'd only make it harder dealin' with people if she's not facin' 'em every day--an' that it wouldn't be fair ta Holly an' Caleb."
"I don't know if they'd like still having to go to school if I stayed at home," Tara explained, somewhat sheepishly. "Besides, like Dad says, I don't want to just hide away completely."
