"What, lying in politics? That couldn't possibly happen!" Alex batted his eyelashes and mugged outrageously, then gave Daws' trenchcoat an admiring look. "Say, I like your tailor. You fit in great in this joint. Sorta like Humphrey Bogart."
This gave him an opening to launch into one of his flawless impressions. Rico laughed at the entertainer's antics, and even the somewhat rigid Henry cracked a faint smile.

Daws grinned and pushed her fedora back. "Hey, anybody who can do a Bogart impression that good is okay in my book." She chuckled.

"Thanks, sweetheart," Alex drawled, then gave a small salute and strutted off to the next table.
Rico shook his head after the entertainer, then looked up at the screen above the stage and grinned. "Things are lookin' pretty good."

"No kidding." Daws nodded. "That's the numbers with most of the mutant-heavy precincts counted -- but even so, Cole's got a good lead." She grinned and raised her glass. "Looks like we've got a good reason to celebrate, after all."

"This is certainly going to make things interesting," Henry murmured. "I rather pity the man..."

Daws raised an eyebrow. "Well, you know what the worst curse you can put on a person is -- 'May you gain what you most desire'." She shrugged one shoulder. "It's definitely a tough job, and you couldn't pay me enough to do it."

"I hear that," said Rico.
"How do you suppose people with anti-mutant sentiments are going to take it?" Henry wondered aloud.

Daws frowned thoughtfully and drummed her fingers on the tabletop. "I dunno." She admitted. "Cole's been doing his best to appeal to everybody -- tryin' to make friends even among the people who don't think too much of mutants."
Her frown deepened. "I think he's succeeded in a lot of places. But the people who work at hating us -- the ones who really define themselves with it . . ." She shrugged somewhat uncomfortably. "Them, I don't know about."

"Mister Cole better be careful when he's out in public," Rico murmured. "I know he's had plenty of threats. They had to clear out campaign headquarters over bomb scares three times."

"And it'll only get worse." Daws noted. "He oughtta look into hiring some bodyguards -- if not for himself, then for his . . ." she suddenly remembered that Cole's sister's mutation was not common knowledge, and quickly finished "His family, anyway."

"I'm kinda wondering if I can get a permanent job with him," Rico admitted. "I wasn't as serious about the whole thing back at first, but I've really gotten to believe in what he's doing."

Daws nodded. "Well, it never does any harm to ask, right? I'm sure they're gonna need people they can trust."

Rico shrugged demurely. "Guess we'll have to see after all the hoopla dies down."
Sid buzzed by the table then, and an observer who knew him well could note that he looked somewhat like a trapped bird. He put on a grin and leaned down slightly beside the table. "Everybody doin' okay here?"
Henry raised an eyebrow. "Yes--quite."
"That's great. Have a nice evenin'..." As he made his way out of Rico's line of sight, he gave Daws and Henry a significant look, jerking his head faintly toward the entrance.
Nicholas Tiernan was sauntering in--or as close as he could come to a saunter, weighted by his cloaked, misshapen back.

Daws sighed inwardly. Yeah, I thought this night was going a little too smoothly to be believed.
She kept Tiernan in her peripheral vision and debated the best way to weave whatever greeting he might give into her cover as a reporter.
Of course, he might not come over here at all. Daws bit back a derisive snort. Sure, Ace. Like you've ever had luck that good.

For the moment, Tiernan was too busy greeting other supporters of Cole to pay any attention to Daws. His appearances in public were quite rare, and once he was identified, the other guests were more than eager to acquaint themselves with the richest man in the room--if not the entire country.
Rico watched him circulating, a thoughtful frown on his face.
"That guy showed up at campaign headquarters one day," he said. "I hear he's a big supporter of mutants, but... I dunno. He gives me the creeps."
Henry had never set eyes on Tiernan before, and almost looked to be holding his breath with morbid suspense.

Daws nodded slowly. "Yeah, I've bumped into people who work for him before -- and I spoke with him once or twice, sort of off the record." She shrugged. "I've heard a lot of good things about him . . . but to be honest," she shot a glance sideways at Rico, "He gives me the creepy shudders, myself."

After a few more minutes of exchanging greetings, Tiernan's glance happened to pass in their direction. With an interested look, he sidled over.
"Taking an interest in politics, Miss Dawson?" he inquired, in the smoothly personable manner he was capable of adopting when it suited him.

Daws smiled politely. "I can't spend all my time undercover, Mister Tiernan. Even newspaper reporters take a night off every now and again." She shrugged faintly. "Besides . . . in my business, you never know where you'll hear something worth knowing -- or worth printing."

The hint was not lost upon Tiernan, and he smirked.
"If you expect to hear anything worth knowing in politics, Miss Dawson, I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment. Of course, that doesn't stop reporters from printing it anyway." His dark gaze passed over Henry and Rico. "May I be introduced?"

"Of course." Daws gestured to the other two people at her table. "This is Rico Sandoval and Henry Casselton -- Nicholas Tiernan."
