Daws nodded. "All right. He wanted me to look into the warehouse that Vance destroyed a couple nights ago -- I can go to 'im with what I learned from my friend in the Arson office, and then bring up our . . . 'proposal'." She nodded at Joey. "You might as well head to work like usual -- I'll head after you in just a bit."

Joey nodded, and shook Daws' hand again.
"I... thanks, Daws." He smiled timorously, then turned and headed off across the baseball diamond. His usual bounce was absent from his stride, but his steps were steady and determined.
He had an awful lot to think about.

Daws sighed and chuckled lightly as she and Father Rick watched the teen's retreating form. "Well, heck," She grinned mischievously at the Padre, "That wasn't so hard."
Father Rick shook his head. "I just hope Tiernan'll go for it. The sooner that boy's out of his hands, the better." The priest glanced at Daws. "That was a good thing you did."
The detective shrugged. "Just what Jack did for me, once. What he'd have wanted me to do." She scratched behind her ear. "Jack would've liked the kid."
"Yes. He would have." With his rear eyes, Father Rick glanced in the direction in which Vance had disappeared. "And what is it we're going to do about our friend the Major?"
Daws groaned. "I think -- I'm not positive, but I think -- that I might hate that man."
Padre chuckled. "Give him time."
"We give him enough time, they'll be scraping what's left of Manhattan Island into little labled jars." Daws retorted.
Father Rick shook his head. "We'll have to call together the resistance, ask them what we should do." He glanced quizzically at Daws. "Are you going to bring Vance's name into it with Tiernan?"
Daws thought for a moment, then slowly raised and lowered one shoulder. "Haven't decided, yet. Guess it'll depend on whether I've decided not to like him by the time I get to Tiernan's place."
Padre nodded. "Think hard about it. Vance's going to call down enough of his own trouble, without your help." He rubbed his hands together briskly and patted the detective's back.
"Come on, then. You've got to head uptown, and I've got to telephone the others." He grinned slyly, and added
"And you've still got to find that fellow who didn't pay his rent!"
