Nate shook his head. "Not really. But it's... well, sort of like reaching into a corner you can't see into, I guess. I get just a little bit of sensation from it, so I can do things with it by touch--but it's sure a lot easier and more effective if I can see what I'm doing."

Padre rubbed the back of his neck thoughtfully. "How long can you keep that up for?" He asked, glancing briefly at Major Vance, "You don't run a risk of giving out too much energy while you're doin' that, do ya?"

Nate frowned. "You mean, does it make me tired or something? It never has yet. But then, I've never really done it for that long."

Father Rick chuckled. "Run around with this lot for a while, and that's bound to change."
"You suggesting we're exhausting, Padre?" A voice called from the back row. There was a scattering of laughter, and the priest rolled his eyes.
"You know the answer to that one, Roland."

Nate grinned; the camaraderie of these people who were mostly mutants, and yet such perfectly ordinary folks, was infectious.
Vance clapped Nate on the shoulder, using the affectionate movement to gently push him toward a vacant chair in the front row. Then he waved a hand to quiet the chuckling crowd.
"For any of you who are wondering what's on the resistance agenda... The answer is that at the moment, there really isn't anything. I'd like to think it's because Nocturne is being quiet, but I'm afraid it's more likely that his security crackdown is keeping us from finding out what he's up to."

Ana Cordova frowned. "What about that guy Cole? Thought part of our deal was that he was gonna help us out with spyin' on Tiernan."

Vance frowned, glancing at Daws, and struggled for a tactful answer.
"Well... Remember, you're talking about the mayor-elect. And dealing with a politician who's looking at running the biggest city in the nation..." He cleared his throat. "Things are a little complicated there."

"We'll meet with Cole eventually," Daws put in, "And get everything straightened out there. Until then, the best we can do is keep on with what we've been doing -- keep our ears open for any chance to get at Tiernan."

Seated on a chair in the front row, Sid scratched his head. "You said ya wanted ta talk about the Spook hirin' at Lusus Natural, right? 'Cause I can tell ya the work's just about done, an' I'll be ready ta start findin' people."

Daws nodded and glanced across the room at Proteus. "You still willing to help us out with screening for Spooks we can trust to work at Lusus?"

Proteus nodded. "Under the circumstances, I know you need people you can trust. I have a few in mind."

"There's a handful of the folks who've been staying around the Parish that seem like decent enough people." Father Rick added, nodding to Proteus. "We can run those names past you as well."

Proteus nodded to the priest. Then he glanced at Daws, with a faint smile.
"Would it shock you completely if I suggested Sham as a candidate?"

Daws made a faint choking noise. "Sham? Not completely, maybe -- but pretty darn close." She raised an eyebrow. "You really think our bunch can trust him after what went on?"

Proteus grinned slightly. "Oh, Sham's got an attitude, alright--but he's responsible, and he's devoted to looking after what's best for the Spooks. They trust him, and you're going to need that."

"I can't argue with that." Daws shrugged broadly. "Well, I trust your judgment -- and I'll try not to antagonize him too much."

"I'll have a talk with him, myself," Proteus replied. "He knows the Spooks need these jobs, and I don't think he'll be too keen to spoil a nice arrangement like you're offering. Besides..." He glanced at Sid. "You said you were going to stay out of the everyday running of the place, right?"
Sid nodded. "I got my hands full enough with my own place."
"That's fine. Best to leave Sham to himself. You'll see how well he can manage things." Proteus smirked. "He knows he'll answer to me if he doesn't do right by the other Spooks."

Daws gave a satisfied nod. "Good to know. We want things to stay as low-profile as possible." She chuckled dryly. "As low-profile as a mutie bar gets, anyway."

"Okay then." Proteus turned to the Padre. "Who were the other candidates you had in mind?"

Padre rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "There's a woman named Shatter -- she's been a lot of help keepin' the Spook kids in line. And a fellow who goes by Blaze -- doesn't talk much, but he seems like a good sort."
