Padre nodded. "Sure thing. I'll see if I can't find someone with kids near his age -- I know we've got quite a few."

"Thanks," Thorn replied, with an appreciative grin.
Sid was fastening his portfolio. "Guess that's about all we can do fer now. You folks can take those forms an' fill 'em out between now an' Wednesday." He eyed Sham and Tusker. "You two are gonna havta do it Wednesday at Lusus, when we got your papers."
"Fine," Sham murmured. "Are we done?"
"Well, I got everything I need right now, I guess." Sid glanced at Daws, Vance, and Father Steele. "Anythin' else ta add?"

Daws shook her head, and Father Rick shrugged. "Just that I wish all of you luck. I hope this'll be a good experience for the whole lot of you." He glanced at Tusker and Sham.

Sham's lips twisted. "It's money that'll help my people. That's all I care."
"You'll get that," Sid replied firmly. "I've already been givin' as much as I can afford inta that fund Mayor Cole set up."
Vance's expression was uncharacteristically soft as he glanced at Sid. "And if I know you, probably more than that." Then he gave Sham and Tusker a dangerous look. "So I'd be doing my best to be worthy of that, if I were you. My heart isn't as big as Mister Rosenstein's--and if you don't make good, I wouldn't have any compunctions about some creative reallocating of his charity."
Sham merely glared sullenly at Vance.

"Well," Blaze shrugged, "Can't speak for anybody else, but I'll sure do my best."
"So will I." Blur chimed in. Shatter merely nodded.

Sid smiled at the four friendlier Spooks. "Oh, don't mind Major Vance. He ain't much of a people person. I'm sure all this'll work out okay."
"Yeah. Sure. Whatever. See you Wednesday." Sham glanced at Tusker. "C'mon," he murmured, and the two walked away.
With a sigh, Sid shook his head after them. "I got a feelin' those two are gonna be trouble."

Shatter chuckled. "Well, neither one of them is much of what you'd call a 'people person', either."
" 'Specially if the people involved aren't Spooks." Blaze added with an apologetic shrug.

"Yeah, well." Sid shrugged. "I'm hopin' they'll change their ideas once they really see what I'm tryin' ta do. Winnin' them over'd be the best way I can think of ta prove ta your people that I wanna do somethin' right for ya."

"No kidding." Blur said. "I dunno if anybody but Proteus ever convinced Sham of anything -- but good luck trying, all the same." She grinned. "Anyway, you've got me convinced."

"I 'preciate that," Sid replied warmly. "'Cause it's only with your help that I'll have any chance a' convincin' them an' any others like 'em."
Vance frowned and scratched his jaw thoughtfully. "I'm not so sure it's a good idea to trust the security to them. I can just as easily imagine Sham and Tusker taking a cut of under-the-table goings-on as keeping them out."
Sid shrugged, meeting Vance's gaze levelly. "I'm gonna prove I trust 'em. If they don't live up ta that..." He grinned. "That's why I got pals like you, ain't it?"
The Major's lips twisted. "As long as that involves evening the score for you--not laying flowers on your grave."

"I wouldn't worry too much about our Mister Rosenstein, Jerod." Daws said with a fond grin. "There's a lotta steel under that cuddly exterior, y'know."

Sid gave Daws a dubious look. "Cuddly? Man, if the ol' boys from the Comancini gang were ta hear that..."

"Don't worry." Daws grinned wickedly. "I won't spread it around too much."
"Just in front of his future employees." Father Rick interjected with amusement.

Thorn grinned. "Nah, I understand." He gave Sid a sympathetic look. "Didn't I hear you're a single dad?"
"Yeah." Sid sobered. "An' my oldest daughter's a mutant. Bein' a dad, an' especially a dad whose kid has ta face everything that comes with that... Well, ya get soft in places--an' hard in others."
"Tell me about it." Thorn nodded thoughtfully. "Dylan hasn't shown up any mutations yet. He's only three, and his mother wasn't a mutant. Sometimes I can hardly look at him without wondering--will he? And if he does, what will it be?"

"It's the same with a lot of the little ones in the parish." Father Rick mused. "So many possibilities for them, good and bad." He spread his hands. "But there's no way of knowing until it happens."

"Yeah, I know that feelin' too," Sid observed somberly. "I got two younger ones ta wonder all that about, too."
He was thoughtfully silent for a moment, then shook his head and reshifted his focus. "Anyway... Like I said, you folks come around ta Lusus on Wednesday, about noon. Me an' a coupla good people from my club'll be there ta show ya the ropes."

Sid grinned. "Sure thing."
He exchanged handshakes with the Spooks and Father Steele, then grasped Major Vance's hand. "Thanks fer the nice things ya said, Major. I know what it means, comin' from you."
Vance shrugged diffidently--perhaps hiding a touch of chagrin. "I stand by square guys."
