"Well, it makes sense for square guys to stick together." Daws said, giving Vance's shoulder a gentle squeeze.

Vance grinned and gave Daws a slight peck on the cheek. "Take care of yourself, Regina. I'm still trying to work some angles with my informants, so I'll let you know if I come up with anything."

"Sure -- I'll do the same on this end." She grasped his hand briefly. "You watch yourself out there, Jerod."

"Will do," Vance replied, with a cocky nod, and watched as Daws and Sid walked away.
Sid grinned haplessly and shook his head as he slid behind the wheel of his car. "I must be nuts."

Daws chuckled quietly. "I'm starting to wonder, myself. Most of 'em seem okay, but Sham and Tusker . . ." she shook her head. "I guess I trust Proteus okay, but it doesn't really keep me from having my doubts about those two."

"I'd feel a lot better if he was puttin' the evil eye on 'em." Sid scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Ya s'pose he'd mind showin' up Wednesday, just ta let 'em know he's keepin' an eye on this whole project?"

Daws shrugged. "I suppose I can get in touch with him and ask him to drop by. It's not like he'd have to worry about being recognized, after all."

"I'd be glad if he would." Sid raised an eyebrow at Daws. "Sounded like you're not wantin' ta show up around there yourself. I kinda feel like I'd like ta have somebody tough around that I know is on my side--but I guess you an' the Major are both out."

"Yeah, I think it's better that way." Daws thought for a moment, then snickered. "Well, I suppose we could always send Father Rick along with you -- everyone in the neighborhood knows he's been helping get the Spooks back on their feet. And he's no slouch in the 'tough' department, when he has to be."

Sid chuckled weakly. "I'd be glad of it, if he ain't busy that day. I'll have Foxy an' Grace there, but, well..." He glanced at Daws, with a look that thoroughly expressed his thoughts about the usefulness of either entertainer when it came to dealing with Mean People.

"I'm sure Padre'd be glad to do it." Daws replied reassuringly. "I could ask Vance to send a couple of his low-profile boys around, too, if you think you'll need them."

"Nah." Sid shook his head. "I don't think anything's gonna get physical before we even reopen the place. I just kinda want, whadaya call it..." He grinned. "Moral support."

Daws laughed. "Well, nobody better for that than a priest, I guess."

Sid chuckled. "Long as he ain't expectin' ta hear confession from anybody."
He was silent for a moment, then quirked his lips and glanced at Daws. "How 'bout your little apprentice Joey? I mean--it might help ta have one more person I know helpin' out at Lusus for a coupla weeks. But with the history he's got with the bat's people... how would that play with the Spooks, an' with any a' the bad guys that might come sniffin' around?"

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "Well, if I remember right, Joey worked a little at Lusus back in the day -- I guess it wouldn't be unheard of that he'd come back around. So far as any of the bad guys know, he's still on Tiernan's side.
"As for the Spooks . . . well, Joey and me got in a pretty nasty fight with Sham and Tusker the night we met. I doubt they'll just let that go." Her expression darkened. "It's not that Joey can't take care of himself, but I don't want those two giving him any grief."

"Huh." Sid frowned. "Well, I don't wanna put him on the spot. I don't really need anybody else; just thought he could help." He paused. "An' I sorta woulda liked knowin' the money he's takin' Tara on dates with was comin' from a straight source. I'm not real comfortable with him cashin' a paycheck from the bat--yeah, I know, even if he's mostly answerin' ta you now."

Daws nodded understandingly. "Heck, Sid, I don't like me cashing a paycheck from the Bat. Anyway, I'll run the idea by Joey, see if he'd like to lend a hand." She shrugged. "Things have been kind of slow around the office lately, anyway. He might like something to do."

Sid grinned. "Well, I'd be glad ta give him that. He's too young for bartendin', but there's always floors ta sweep an' tables ta clean. But you got dibs on him if you need him fer anythin'."
He paused. "Just don't tell him what I said about the money thing. I don't wanna give him a guilt trip. He's a good kid, an' I know he's doin' honest work--even if the cash goes through dirty hands before it gets ta him."

Daws grinned. "I won't say anything." She cuffed Sid's shoulder affectionately. "I know I've said it before, Sid, but you're a good guy."

The ex-enforcer blushed. "Aww. Well."
After a moment's silence, he changed the subject. "Anyway, I got some a' my own troubles ta look after before I see those Spooks again. Tony's hired out the Club fer this Saturday. Throwin' a wedding party fer one of his lieutenants."
