Vance shrugged. "I'd say we tell him the facts. It's not like we can hide much from him, anyway. He'll see there really aren't any other options, aside from sending his sister away completely."

Father Rick frowned thoughtfully. "I suppose if Tiernan's going to act quickly, we'd better be ready to do the same."
"And beat him to it, if we can." Daws agreed.

"So does that mean another unannounced visit to Cole tonight?" Nate inquired.
Vance eyed his son doubtfully, then shrugged. "No telling how much time we have to head Tiernan off. I don't guess we have much of a choice but to move now."

Daws nodded. "The Mayor's office is closed up for the night, so unless he's got some social function going on, Cole oughtta be home."

"Then the only question is who oughta come along to break the news to him." Vance turned to Daws. "Besides you and me, who else do we want on the scene? I don't figure Cole would get violent under these circumstances, but safety in numbers never hurts."

Daws frowned thoughtfully and glanced around the room. "Handy and Nate have been there before." She said, "They'll be familiar with the layout. Ana, if you think you can keep from electrocuting the mayor -- a blackout might be a good thing to have in reserve, just in case."
Ana shrugged and let sparks dance idly across the palm of one hand. "I guess I can reign it in, just this once."

"Don't need me, huh?" Sid asked.
Vance smiled slightly and shook his head. "Can't invite everybody to the party. Besides, you've got your own business to look after. You might as well take the Doc home and get on to the Club."
Sid smiled grimly. "I'll leave the backdoor light on in case ya have any trouble."

Daws smiled crookedly and nodded. "We'll let you know if any problems come up, Sid. With any luck, though, we can keep this from getting too terrible."

"Okay then." Vance frowned. "I'm going to send some guys out to watch Cole's sister's place anyway. We can't afford to let Tiernan get ahold of her--so if he does try anything tonight, they'll just have to put a stop to it."

Daws grimaced. "Here's hoping it doesn't come down to that -- it's a complication we don't need. Still, I guess it's better to be prepared."

"Right." Vance turned to Father Steele. "I guess everyone else can close up shop and head home from 'choir practice', Padre. If everything goes alright, nothing will happen--but if it doesn't, the whole city might feel the fallout."

Father Rick nodded and turned to address the room. "All right, folks, you heard the man. Clear out and get yourselves home -- and be careful about it." He frowned and added "Keep alert for the next couple days, people . . . if this thing does go bad we're going to need to run some serious damage control. Hope it won't come to that -- but be ready, and be safe."
The priest made a dismissing motion with his hands and the meeting broke up, people slipping out in groups of two and three.

"Thanks." Vance inclined his head to the Padre. "Just pray that Cole has some shred of sense in his head. There's no reason to expect a disaster if we can just get that lucky."

Padre nodded solemnly. "I'll send up an extra prayer for it, Boyo. You be careful tonight, as well."
