"Maybe I could pull some strings an' get her a job at a ritzier non-mutant place," Sid mused.
Vance shook his head. "She wouldn't take it. Remember, she still works for Tiernan--not for you. Besides, from what I hear, she takes too much pride in her telekinetic bartending acrobatics to hide them in a mundie joint."
Sid grunted in resigned agreement. "Yeah, guess so."
The Major passed his glance over the crowd. "Anything else, folks? Remember, anything you hear might be important--no matter how trivial it might seem."

There were scattered negative murmurs and shaken heads. Father Rick spread his hands. "Well, keep your ears open. And keep in mind -- if you hear anything that might be useful, contact one of us as soon as you can."

Vance nodded, and waved his hand in a half-salute. "If Proteus turns up anything you can help with, we'll let you know. Good night, folks."
He watched as the parish regulars began to file out, then folded his arms and glanced at the core resistance members, who had closed in around him.
"Unimportant as Cole's tip sounds, I don't like it. It's been a while since Tiernan has gotten personally excited over anything."

"I hear you there, Boyo." The Padre rubbed the back of his neck. "Like I said -- we all know what that monster generally gets excited over."
"And none of it is anything good." Daws added, lashing her tail.

"I guess all we can do is wait for Proteus to hear something--and to decide if he wants to grace us with it," Vance murmured. "In the meantime, I'm going to check with my moles, but I'm not too hopeful on that count."
He grinned slightly at Daws. "I can offer you a ride home--if you don't mind the kids in the back seat," he said, chucking a thumb at Nate and Handy.

Daws grinned. "Sure thing -- I want to hear how Nate's little vacation went over."

"Uhh..." Nate groaned, putting a hand over his eyes.
Sid chuckled. "An' Foxy an' I gotta drop the Doc off at home before we head ta work. Guess maybe we'll be seein' ya again soon, if things pan out... here's hopin' it won't lead up ta any rough stuff." He frowned, then smiled at Vance and Father Steele. "'Til later, Major. Padre."

Father Rick nodded. "Sid. You all be careful out there. Same goes for you lot." He glanced at Vance, Daws, Nate and Handy.
Daws chuckled and waved one hand. "Yes, Father. We'll see you later."

In the parking lot, the two groups of resistance members broke off for their separate cars. Vance opened the door of his car for Daws, then circled around to the driver's seat.
"Nate's lucky," Handy piped up to Daws from the back seat. "He came back with his skin still on him."

Daws twisted in her seat and raised an eyebrow at Nate, grinning wickedly. "Managed to survive without too much damage, huh?"

"Eesh." Nate frowned. "Don't get me wrong, Miss Cole is a nice young woman--just set in her ways, I guess. I hoped I could warm her up to the idea of getting out from Mister Cole's wing, but those conversations got kind of... tense."

Daws frowned. "Hunh. Well, I certainly can't see the attraction . . ." she shrugged. "But knowing her brother, I guess the 'set in her ways' part isn't all that surprising."

"That poor kid doesn't even have any servants anymore to keep her company," Nate recalled. "Frankly, it sounded to me like the one pressuring her to hide from life is Cole. Sometimes I really thought she was feeling like she wanted better--but then she'd just murmur something about how he'd worry about her, and the subject was closed."

Daws frowned. "I don't like that, much. Even if he thinks it's noble, he doesn't have the right to keep someone else from living for herself . . . especially since he does nutty things like put the rest of us in danger to do it."

"Personally, I've got no use for him," Vance murmured. "I'd just as soon forget that we know him or he knows us. If he thinks this clue he's thrown our way is going to change my attitude about him, well..."
Nate shrugged. "I guess we should see where it leads before we judge that."

Daws nodded. "A lead is a lead, at this point. I'm no crazier about Cole than you are -- but shaky as it is, it's still the best lead we've had in quite a while on what the Bat's up to."

"If it ever goes anywhere," Vance sighed. Then he glanced over at Daws and crooked his lips faintly.
"You haven't had much guerilla warfare on your hands lately, yourself. How's business?"

Daws gave an elaborate shrug and leaned back in her seat. "Boring. All I've had on the roster have been a couple of people who've skipped out on rent, a minor embezzler and a missing relative who turned out to have eloped." She grinned crookedly, shaking her head. "This underground resistance thing has ruined me for honest snooping."

"It sorta ruins people for honest anything," Nate piped up with a grin.
Vance nodded commiseratively. "We've been lapsing into routine, too. Just the usual business of keeping the troops fed. We're trying not to run so many crack dealers out of town that they stop coming completely," he said with a wincing smile.

Daws chuckled. "That would sorta produce some problems in your funding, wouldn't it?"
