"I can take--" Vance started, but Henry cut him off.
"If you'll pardon me, Major, I think Daws might be better off getting a ride with me. It would be a little inconvenient for the rest of us if you two killed each other in a continuation of your little negotiation about who goes and stays."

Daws grinned crookedly and ducked her head. "I guess you've got a point there. Thanks, Henry."

Henry inclined his head to Daws. Vance shot a black look between the undertaker and the detective, then sighed heavily.
"Alright. I'll start lining up people and hardware for... well, whatever it is we might be walking into. But we've got to pull together what infomation we can and meet up again in a hurry--time's as much against us as it's ever been."
Proteus frowned. "If I can get anything more by noon tomorrow, I'll come back here."

Father Rick nodded. "I'll be here, at least."
"I guess we all might as well meet back up here." Daws said with a shrug. "Dunno if Jai can manage anything by then, but if he can I'll have him send Veeru with a report."

"Alright then, we know what we're doing for the next half-day, at least." Vance hesitated, then glanced at Proteus. "Thank you for telling us. Whatever we have to do, at least it's the chance to try to stop Tiernan from achieving something. And... it's important to me, for Colonel Ashley's sake."
Proteus nodded, and a crooked, humorless smile crossed his lips. "Just wish me luck for now," he remarked, and turned to climb the stairs.

"Good luck." Daws murmured as the shapeshifter retreated, "To all of us."
She shrugged and glanced at Henry. "Well . . . if there's nothing else to be said right now, I suppose I'm ready whenever you are, Henry."

Henry inclined his head, and turned to move toward the stairs.
Vance took hold of Daws' arm, and spoke in a quiet voice. "Just remember one thing, Regina. It's better to have too few people on a mission than people who aren't trained and qualified for it. Think about that." He drew in a deep breath. "And when the time comes to leave, if you're still sure you are... well, I won't kick any more."

Daws nodded. "I'll think about it -- you've got my word on that." She squeezed his shoulder gently. "Be careful out there, Jerod."

"You too," Vance said gently. He watched Daws walk away, then turned back to the others who were preparing to leave. "Malone, Doc..." He shook his head wryly, then gave Sid a sympathetic look. "Good luck dealing with 'em, Sid."
"I'll do what I gotta," Sid murmured laconically, and led Alex and Miriam out.
Vance clasped Father Steele's hand. "Okay. We'll see you tomorrow."

Father Rick nodded. "Good luck to ya, Boyo. See you then."
