Daws grimaced. "Oh, joy. Here's hoping I can get it into those loons' heads that I wanna keep them and Proteus from getting hurt."
She lapsed into a thoughtful silence for a long moment, staring into her coffee cup -- then looked up with a sudden, inspired expression. "But if I can get 'em to play along -- I think I might've just thought of how we can show Tiernan a corpse to back up our story."

"How?" Miriam asked. Especially after the events of the night before, she was obviously the one most concerned with any talk of corpses.

Daws grinned slowly. "Asagi Tam. Sid, Handy -- you guys have seen her trick. She sort of . . . takes her spirit out of her body. Thing is, while she's doing it her physical body goes into a sort of trance -- her heartbeat and her breathing basically stop."
Daws shrugged. "If we can convince the bat that that's the form Proteus was in when he died -- it might just work."

Alex grimaced. "Okay, that's... kind of insane. But if you think it'll work..."
"Supposin' the bat wants ta make sure the 'body' is really dead?" Sid asked anxiously.

Daws frowned. "Good point." She thought for a moment. "Well . . . the whole plan is contingent on the Spooks cooperating, anyhow. Suppose if they acted upset enough about it . . . and Eric Grove works doin' stage makeup, so he could most likely work up something pretty realistic in the way of 'fatal injuries' . . ."
She shrugged. "I guess it is pretty insane, Alex -- but it's easier than trying to steal a corpse from someplace."

Miriam wrapped her arms around herself, looking less than comfortable with the subject of corpses.
"You might not have to steal one. Maybe Henry would be able to work something out... if he had the right kind of 'customer' in the cooler."
Sid frowned. "Are we assumin' Tiernan wouldn't even test the corpus ta make sure it's a mutant? Heck, fer all we know, he could even tell if it was a shape-changer. Don't he have at least one of his own ta check it against?"
"Yeah--that woman shapeshifter at the Gray Lab," Alex recalled.

Daws grimaced. "Ugh. Forgot about her."
She gave a frustrated sigh. "I dunno. After what happened with Hubert, I know Tiernan won't believe that Proteus is dead unless he sees a body. I guess the real question is whether he'll still take it out on the Spooks if Proteus isn't dead, just disappeared."
Daws shrugged and frowned into her coffee cup. "Suppose I could give the old bat a sort of 'status report' and feel him out on the issue."

"It wouldn't hurt to know more about how he plans to deal with this," Miriam agreed. "And how long he's willing to wait for the Spooks to give Proteus up."

Daws pulled a wry face. "Lovely -- a meeting with the Spooks and a face-to-face with Tiernan. And the day started out on such a high note, too."
She drained her coffee and nodded. "Okay, I probably better hit up Tiernan first. That way I can think about what to say to the Spooks."

Handy shrugged. "Ya want somebody ta take ya into town?"

Daws shrugged. "If you don't mind the trip, yeah. I wouldn't be above asking for some company before I venture into Spooktown, either."

"I wouldn't mind seein' these Spooks my self," Sid remarked.
Handy nodded. "Sure. Lemme just let Jerod know I'm goin', if he's still awake."
Sid smiled humorlessly. "Great. Gives me time ta get my gun--just in case."
In short order, Daws, Handy, and Sid made their way out to Vance's car. Handy drove them into the city, letting Daws out a few blocks from Tiernan Enterprises. "We'll wait here."

Daws nodded. "I won't be long -- at least I hope not."
She straightened her fedora and turned her steps for the Tiernan Enterprises building.
