Daws nodded. "Yeah . . . he's doing okay. Still itching to get back to running things, of course -- I don't think it'll be long now. Caddy's supposed to give him a final going-over, just to make it official -- but if he doesn't get around to it soon, I think Vance may just tunnel his way out."

Sid chortled. "I never figured the Major for the 'Hogan's Heroes' type."
"Daws, how d'you want your empanadas?" Alex asked. "We can melt cheese over 'em, or serve 'em on a bed of salad, or put whipped cream on 'em..."
"Basically, he'll do anything you can dream up," Miriam simplified with a grin.

"Better than any restaurant." Daws grinned. "Cheese sounds good -- thanks, Alex."

"Sure. Comin' right up." Alex grinned at Daws, then bustled back to the stove.
Tara appeared in the doorway to the dining room. "The table's all set."
"Go ahead and sit down," Miriam told Daws and Sid. "We'll be in with the food in just a minute."

Daws nodded and followed Sid into the dining room, where the Rosenstein kids were already seated. She grinned affectionately at Caleb and ruffled his hair as she took a seat at the dining room table. "Heya, kiddo -- hear you got a tooth out."

"Uh-huh--ish vas vight here," Caleb replied informatively, as he pulled back his lip and pointed to the gap where an upper left tooth had once resided.
"Oh, stop," Holly protested, making a face at him.
"It's under my pillow. Now the toof fairy's gonna bring me a dollar." Clearly, the gap in Caleb's teeth was having a small effect on his pronunciation.

"A dollar? No kiddin'?" Daws grinned and shot a brief, teasing glance in Sid's direction. "The tooth fairy has raised the rates since I was little."

Sid twitched a grin. "I guess some a' the tooth fairy's helpers know more about gettin' teeth knocked out than others." He smiled at his son. "'Sides, I'd say Cabe earned it for bein' such a trooper at the dentist's, huh kid?"
"It didn't really hurt him at all," Holly asided to Daws in a low voice.

"Maybe not," Daws murmured back with a grin, "But if we get ice cream out of the deal, then I'm not complaining."

"Not 'til after ya eat yer dinner," Sid retorted.
Alex and Miriam entered then, carrying plates of empanadas dressed up in half a dozen more ways than Alex had described.
"Chow down!" he announced cheerily.

Daws grinned and reached for the nearest platter. "Thanks, you two. This beats my usual fare any day."
She pulled a wry face. "Now that you've got Miriam schooled, Alex, maybe you oughtta give me a few lessons one of these days. Cooking just wasn't one of those things Jack got around to teaching me -- but considering what his cooking was like, that's not a bad thing."

Alex grinned. "Anytime. Say, maybe you could help us out with the meals we're cooking for the Spook refugees. I've been at the Paragon every morning, fixing up dinner for about sixty of 'em. A coupla Major Vance's people come over to pick 'em up."

Daws smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I could do that. Business has been pretty slow lately, anyway."

"You can help keep Alex honest," Miriam said with a smile. "He keeps forgetting he's feeding families and loners, not people who are used to hundred-dollar-a-plate dinners."
"Why shouldn't they eat something good?" Alex queried.
Sid shook his head. "Fer one thing, 'cause they're not used to it, an' you'll give 'em indigestion. Fer another, 'cause I'm payin' for the chow."

Daws chuckled. "If you and Sid together can't keep him honest, Doc, then I'm not going to make any guarantees. I'm pretty sure he likes you better than he does me."

Alex stuck his tongue out at Daws. "Shucks, no. I just looked at Major Vance and saw which way the wind was gonna blow."

"That a fact?" Daws grinned and glanced at Sid. "Apparently I was the last one in this whole group to figure it out."

"It's a tossup 'tween you an' the Major," Sid admitted cheerfully. "We were startin' ta think we'd need ta draw ya some pictures."
Tara grinned at Daws. "Well, I think it's great. I liked Major Vance when we met him at my birthday. And I thought you two were cute dancing together," she giggled.

Daws chuckled. "There's that word 'cute' again. I'll have to be careful or I'll spoil my whole tough, hard-boiled reputation." Then she grinned crookedly and added, "Not that I don't agree with you."

"I'm as aghast as you are," Sid chuckled. "Not 'cause of her usin' the word 'cute' on you, 'cause you are--but the Major cute?" He winced and looked pityingly at his daughter. "She's gonna start worryin' me."
