Proteus eyed the folder thoughtfully as he sat down across from Daws.
"Any ideas of what you plan on doing about that, Miss Dawson?" he asked, tilting his head toward it.

Daws eyed the folder balefully and sighed. "Yeah, a few -- most of 'em pretty half-baked." She admitted.

"I don't envy you. Seems like another case of not necessarily being at odds with Tiernan's intentions--just his methods." Proteus shook his head. "Finding out about these people isn't a bad idea. The problem is what to do about it without letting him get in on it."

"That's exactly it." Daws sighed and shook her head. "That'd be a tall enough order if we hadn't just gone through what we did. As it is . . ."
She shrugged. "Tiernan mentioned bringing some of Cole's political clout to bear on these people, if we can find out who they are. I guess it's not a bad angle -- but I don't know how much good it would do, against people who'd do . . . " She shuddered. "The kind of things we saw."

Proteus frowned.
"In this case, I don't think Tiernan would just politely ask Cole to apply some political pressure. I don't know what else he thinks Cole could do--but I've got an idea he'd want something more drastic. And he's got goods on Cole in a couple different ways. Whatever you're gonna do, maybe you'd better warn Cole there's a storm brewing."

Daws nodded. "I will -- as much good as the advanced warning will do him."
She grimaced. "I guess the most immediate part of this whole mess is actually finding out who these people are. I'm going to take this," she tapped the folder with one claw, "To Jai and put him on the trail -- but these people aren't stupid. As many walls as he ran into trying to crack their computers the first time, I'm not sure he's going to be able to help much."

"If I can help, I'm willing," Proteus replied earnestly. "Even if you can find a small fish in the operation... well, maybe I could fake him and find the way to the big fish."

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "I appreciate that, Proteus -- and I might just take you up on it, if I can find anyone worth imitating. It might have a better chance of working than anything else."

"You know how I feel about people using mutants as guinea pigs," Proteus murmured. Then he fell silent as the waitress wandered over to their table.

The waitress grinned sheepishly. "Sorry -- we're sort of short-handed today. What can I get for ya?"
Daws gave the menu a cursory glance and shrugged. "I'll have the lunch special and an iced tea."

"I'll have a chicken sandwich and fries," said Proteus. "And some lemonade--it's not too sweet, I hope."

The waitress smiled crookedly and shook her head. "We make it ourselves -- it's better that way."
She jotted down their orders, retrieved their menus, and retreated towards the kitchen with a grin.

Proteus smiled pensively. "Nice to see someone like that who takes mutants in stride."

"Yeah." Daws agreed. "Like I said, it's one of the only places in this part of town where that happens. Before I started 'working' for Tiernan, I didn't come this far uptown much during the day."

"He's done a pretty good job keeping the non-passers in his organization out of sight," Proteus mused. "They mostly move around at night too, and not just for that reason--but with the old subway tunnels he's got linked to his basement, you can get in there completely underground from a mile away. I'll have to show you that sometime."

"I haven't been down in Tiernan's underground since the night I got caught up in this whole crazy thing." Daws said thoughtfully. I guess it couldn't hurt to know how to get in that way."
She shrugged. "But I guess I've got a certain pride in walking in there like I do, too. It's like . . . not using the employees' way in means I'm not really working for him." She smiled thinly. "I don't know if that even makes sense."

Proteus chuckled. "Sure it does. I think his people would like to do that themselves--but even if Tiernan is known as a pro-mutant philanthropist, he doesn't exactly want riff-raff like them to be seen around his place."

Daws grinned wickedly. "Having the Ferret around does tend to lower the tone of a place pretty quick, alright."

"I'm none too fond of him," Proteus muttered. "He's tried to pick on me a few times when I'm faking the kid, like now."

Daws scowled. "I never did like the little rat -- and that was before he caused me any trouble personally. He's lucky Tiernan finally put him wise to steer clear of me."
