Daws sighed and reached for her fedora with a shrug. "I guess that's what we came for, Padre. We'll let you know what's going on."
"See that you do." Father Rick stood. "I'll spread the word -- quietly. Maybe someone in the parish'll see something worth seeing, too."
"Yeah, maybe." Daws turned to Joey with a shrug. "All right, I suppose we'd better head back to the office. Unless . . ." She frowned down at the folder in her hands and flipped it open.
"There's an address in here for that dummy corporation's 'offices'. Probably just an empty storefront -- but I guess it couldn't hurt to take a look at the place."

Joey shrugged. "I've got noplace special to be... You think it'd be safe for us to be seen poking around there?"

"Well, I wouldn't try to sneak in the back door or anything," Daws said, "But I think we can get away with strolling down the opposite side of the street. It's not the kind of neighborhood where we'd draw much notice -- not more than usual, anyway."

"If you think so, that's good enough for me," Joey replied. "Can we get there very easy from here?"

Daws nodded and settled her fedora on her head. "Just a quick subway ride and a couple blocks of walking -- no big deal."
"Just watch what you're doin', both of you." Father Rick admonished them.

Joey grinned at the priest. "I'll try to keep her out of trouble."

Father Rick chuckled heartily. "And I've no doubt you'll do as good a job as anyone can, son."
Daws shook her head good-naturedly and headed for the stairs, waving in the Padre's direction. "Okay, I can take a hint. We'll see you around, Father."

When they emerged from the church, Mike Whitebird was busy in the flowerbeds along the walkway. He paused to regard them with his innocently childlike concern as they approached.
"The Major man looked real bad unhappy when he left," he observed. "You got trouble from the Scary Man again?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "Not exactly from him, Mike." She said, "We've just got trouble in general."

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Mike asked ingenuously, absently setting aside a flower pot. "If anybody's bein' mean to you and your friends, I could take care of 'em good."

Daws grinned fondly at him and shook her head. "We'll get it sorted out okay, Mike -- we pretty much always do." She said, in the most convincing tone she could manage. "But thanks."

"Okay," Mike said, sounding unconvinced. "Ya know I'd like to help."
Joey grinned at the big man. "Tell ya what, Mike. I'll come around in the next couple days, and we'll play some basketball--and I'll even bring some chocolate."
Mike's face lit up. "Sure, okay!"

Daws grinned. "There ya go, Mike. Keeping Joey in shape is definitely helpful." She clapped him on the shoulder. "And so is keeping the rest of this place from falling down around our ears."

Mike nodded, and gestured to the pots of pansies and violets scattered around the flowerbed. "I'm puttin' in new flowers... Padre told me what they were, but I forget." He grinned and blushed.

Daws grinned crookedly. "Those're pansies, and the other ones are violets." She said, gesturing to them, "But I don't think it matters much what you call 'em. They're pretty -- that's what matters."

"Yup," Mike nodded sagely, and bent to pick up his trowel again. Then he glanced up at Daws and Joey again.
"You'll come 'n' get me if I can help ya, won't you?"
Joey patted Mike's shoulder. "Sure we will. It's a promise."
Looking reassured, Mike turned back to his gardening.

Daws grinned and held the gate open for Joey, then turned in the direction of the nearest subway station. "That's Mike for you," She remarked once they had moved down the block a ways, "I don't think I ever met anyone who was more eager to help everyone else out."

"Me either," Joey agreed. "I'm glad he's still that way--after the way other people've treated him. I sure don't think I'd feel like that in his place."

"Yeah, neither would I." Daws shrugged as they turned a corner and descended the steps into the subway. "I'm just glad he ended up somewhere he can get the satisfaction of being helpful -- and not get taken advantage of anymore, in the process."

Joey nodded, twisting to follow Daws through a turnstile. "Our Lady is a great place. Now I'd be kinda lost if I couldn't go there for basketball and baseball. I'd like to do more to help out around there, too, if I didn't... you know, have a job I'm kinda tied up in." He grinned feebly. "But I don't guess I need to be taking away any from Mike's job."
