Daws glanced briefly back over her shoulder, then shrugged one shoulder. "Then I'll distract 'em . . . and you get as far away from here as you can, as fast as you can. Tiernan can always bail me out if I get arrested -- but Proteus is busy being you right now. It's trouble we can't afford if you end up in jail while he's still at the bunker."

Joey grimaced, but he found it difficult to argue with that logic.
"If you say so," he murmured reluctantly.

Daws gave him her best attempt at an encouraging grin. "Hey, don't get too worried about it yet -- no sense borrowing trouble."
She settled into the corner formed by the alley wall and the bulk of a battered dumpster, then peered back at the street. "Even going as slow as they were, they oughtta pass by pretty soon here." She said quietly, "Then we'll know whether or not to be worried."

"Can't we--well, maybe get into one of these buildings and get outta sight?" Joey queried.

Daws cast a speculative glance at the nearest doorway. "I suppose it's worth a try," She said, "Someone might've gotten careless and left a side door unlocked."

Joey edged toward the door, reaching out to try the knob. It rattled futilely, and he shook his head. "Locked... but I kinda sorta thought, you know--you picked locks."

Daws chuckled humorlessly. "I kinda sorta do." She replied, pulling her lockpicks out of her coat and moving to bend over the doorknob, "But if there's someone on the other side, walking through an unlocked door is a lot simpler to explain. For some strange reason, people don't seem to buy 'I accidentally picked your lock' quite as easily."
After a moment the lock slid open with a click, and Daws cautiously cracked the door open and glanced inside. "Empty, I think." She pushed the door open and gestured Joey inside. "We might have some luck on our side after all."

"I hope," Joey answered. He slipped in through the door, turning to make sure Daws was following him.

Daws glanced once more over her shoulder and then slipped through the door into an apparently-abandoned storage room littered with broken crates and empty cardboard boxes. She grimaced as she pulled the door shut and locked it behind her.
"Charming." She said, glancing at the thick layer of dust on the floor, "But I guess it's safe to say there hasn't been anybody in here for a while."

"This is crazy." Joey ran a hand through his hair and slumped back against the wall. "So what do we do now--and how long are we supposed to stay here?"

Daws shrugged. "I say we give it five or ten minutes, give the cops plenty of time to move on. After that . . . I dunno. Something about this whole situation isn't quite adding up."
She frowned and leaned one shoulder against the closed door. "The guys responsible for Mount Bliss don't need cops for security -- they've got their own guys for that. And even if they had a couple of the NYPD around for good measure -- I can't figure why they'd have 'em out here in a black-and-white in the middle of the day. It's more of an attention-grabber than you'd think they'd want."

"Maybe one of their mad scientists went postal on his pals," Joey muttered darkly. "Or maybe somebody else heard what they were up to, and decided to do something about it before the rest of us could."

"Yeah, maybe." Daws frowned. "Just more complications we don't have time or energy to deal with, either way."

A thought occurred to Joey, and he felt the pocket of his jacket, then glanced back at Daws. "I've got my cellphone, if you think it'd do any good to call somebody."

Daws frowned. "Yeah, maybe." She rubbed the back of her neck thoughtfully, then held out her hand. "I'll call Bell. This isn't his precinct, but he might be able to shed a little light on the subject."

"Sure." Joey took out the phone and handed it to Daws.

Daws flipped the phone open and dialed the number for the Fifty-First Precinct. "Bell?" She grinned wickedly at the pained groan that echoed from the other end of the line. "Yeah, yeah, I missed you, too.
"Listen, can you do me a favor and look up a call that came in sometime in the last couple hours to the . . . uh, I guess we'd be in the One-Twenty-Seventh? Twenty-nine thirty-five Burrer Street's the address."
She leaned one shoulder against the wall and waited while Bell searched for the requested information, grumbling all the while. After a moment she raised an eyebrow and straightened. "Really? Hunh . . . okay. Thanks, Bell."
She chuckled dryly and handed the cell phone back to Joey. "Well, along with once again telling me not to ever call him again, Bell told me somethin' interesting. They called that car in on an code five ninety-four . . . a vandalism report."

Joey's eyebrows went up.
"Huh... I guess that means somebody else does know what's going on over there, then." He frowned. "Tiernan wouldn't have sent somebody snooping behind your back, would he?"

Daws frowned. "I dunno. I suppose it's possible . . . but I can't imagine why he'd send someone out who'd do anything to call attention to what's going on here. He sounded more interested in dealing with this thing before it went public." She rubbed the back of her neck. "Something's still not adding up."
Daws glanced at Joey with a shrug. "Anyway, Bell said there wasn't any call for a car to watch the block -- so it should be all clear out there by now."

"That's a relief... but I guess it kills our chance of being able to do any snooping ourselves without trouble." Joey glanced at the door. "Should we get out of here?"
