Daws nodded. "Well, the layout and schedule and so forth probably wouldn't hurt -- I guess our most immediate concern is making sure the 'clinic' isn't in any condition to take 'patients', even if that just means a little petty vandalism to buy us some time.
"But if we could find out who's really pulling the strings," She gestured at the picture of 'Doctor G.', "And maybe figure out where to find 'em or how to get at 'em . . . that's the only way we're really going to stop these people."

Proteus frowned uncertainly. "And what do you expect to do with 'em if you do get ahold of 'em? ...You know I've got to ask that, Miss Dawson."

Daws sighed. "I know." She spread her hands slightly. "From what Jai told me and Joey, there was a lot of arguin' going on about the funding for Mount Bliss.
"Maybe if we can find those people, we can convince 'em that we're going to make life too difficult for their budget -- without resorting to anything you'd disapprove of. Maybe."

The shapeshifter raised an eyebrow. "Well, that's a novel idea. Though, I'll admit... I don't like the idea of them being able to start up another one of these projects someplace else." He sighed, then smiled weakly at Daws. "All this puts me in quite a quandary."

"I can imagine." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "I guess we might always turn up something else we can use against them. I don't know -- there's too many blanks involved in this whole thing, right now."

Proteus frowned. "Have you talked to James Cole about all this yet? I'd say it's about time he had an idea of his own--and if there's any politics in this, now's as good a time as any."

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "I haven't had the chance to talk to him yet -- been too busy trying to figure out what we know for that." She nudged the newspaper slightly. "I'm sure he's seen this, at least -- but you're right, we oughtta let him know what's going on."
She frowned meditatively at the photographs spread across the desktop. "You suppose he might be able to put the political squeeze on these guys, if we could track them down for him to do it?"

"At least it's something to hope for." Proteus shrugged. "If he could do anything at all to expose this business, make it public--there are reasons enough these monsters just couldn't afford to go on with what they're doing. At least not with any government sanction... and without that, maybe it'd be a lot easier to force the real law to do something about it."

Daws nodded slowly. "Yeah . . . yeah, you might be on to something there." She rubbed the back of her neck. "It makes sense that whoever's backing these guys in the government would drop 'em if they become embarrassing. All we'd have to do is make them embarrassing enough . . ."
Daws nodded firmly. "Okay. I'll let Cole in on what's happening, let him start figuring out where the political leveraging needs to happen -- and meanwhile, Vance and I will figure out how to grab one of these guys."

Proteus nodded. "Great. If I can get inside, odds are I can find a whole lot more goods to embarrass 'em with. All we'd need then is for Cole to nerve up enough to use it."

Daws grinned ferally. "I figure about ten minutes with Vance 'encouraging' him oughtta be enough to nerve him up." She replied.

Proteus' lips twitched slightly. "I can imagine. Wouldn't want to be in his place during that conversation."

"He oughtta be getting used to it by now." Daws replied with a crooked grin.

Proteus shrugged. "Well, I guess we're starting to have something that looks like a plan. While you're figuring all that out, anything in particular you'd like me to try to do?"

Daws frowned and nodded at the newspaper. "Keep an eye out for those guys, I guess -- or for any sign that Tiernan might've figured out where to find 'em. Of course, any extra info that comes through Tiernan's place probably wouldn't hurt, either."

Proteus nodded. "You know I'll be keeping my eye on that. And by the way..." he grinned crookedly. "Tiernan has his pet weasel sniffing for leads on the street. I know you just adore that guy, so I thought I should warn you to be careful about bumping into him--or letting him see Joey at the wrong time, for that matter."

Daws scowled. "Thanks for the tip -- a run-in with George is about the last thing I need. I gave the kid a couple days off -- but I'll call him and let him know he needs to stick close to his mom's place and stay low-profile."

"Good." Proteus looked thoughtful. "I'll keep checking in with the Spooks, too. Like I expected, they don't want anything to do with a 'cure', and they couldn't care less about anybody trying to peddle one. I've asked 'em to keep their eyes and ears open, but..." He grinned wanly and spread his hands. "They don't have the greatest attention span for things that don't concern them."

"I noticed." Daws smiled crookedly. "I guess if any of the Spooks are likely to hear anything, it's probably the bunch working for Sid at Lusus. Not much happens around here that doesn't get mentioned there."

"That's the most responsible bunch of 'em, anyway," Proteus agreed. "And that's why I haven't gotten down there lately--they take care of themselves alright. I'm too busy running down the Spooks that get into more trouble, when I have time to see any of 'em at all."
He shrugged. "How are they doing under Sid's wing?"
