Daws shook her head. "Nix on that -- he's already been here this morning. Says he'd need some time to look the actual person over before he'd be able to fake them good enough to go in there."

"Hmm." Vance frowned and slouched onto a chair. "Yeah, I guess I can see how those pictures wouldn't be much to go on... but what does he expect us to do? Kidnap one of 'em and let him do a character study? Or would that go against his principles, as usual?"

"He's bending his principles a lot on this one." Daws replied, leaning back against the desk. "And as a matter of fact . . . well, I wouldn't say he 'expects' us to do that, exactly -- but it does look to me like it might be the best in we've got right now."

The Major grimaced. "I'm not crazy about going through what we did with Highsmith again."
"Well, that part of it worked, with Proteus and all," Handy murmured ingenuously.
"Yeah, it worked that far--but I worry a little about how much Highsmith might've told these people, about what he saw and heard with us."

Daws frowned and rubbed the back of her neck. "I guess that's a legitimate worry. Even if he didn't give 'em much, anything is more than we really want them knowing."

"Can't be helped now," Vance muttered. "I'm just not crazy about doing it again--not with Proteus' strict ideas about how to fight guerilla warfare."

"Yeah, that's a complication -- even if he is bending the rules for us, he still won't let us break 'em." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "But I'm not entirely sure what our other options are, at this point."

"Yeah. I know." Vance shrugged irritably. "Okay... so he wants us to pick up one of these goons. It'd help if we had some kind of a schedule of their movements. Does Jai have anything like that for us?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "We've got addresses for these two," she pointed to a pair of photographs, "And the hours that the fake clinic is open. My instinct tells me they're probably being told to lay low when they're not at 'work', but I could be wrong about that."

"I'll have a couple of guys case their homes and shadow 'em," Vance said. "We don't have a lot of time to watch them, if Proteus wants that time for himself--but we'll do what we can to be prepared before we make a grab."

Daws nodded. "Once we do pick one and get hold of him, we'll have to keep him under wraps until whatever else we end up planning goes down, obviously."

Handy grimaced. "I don't think we could take him home with us. If some of the boys got ahold of one of those people, they'd tear him inta little pieces."
"I wouldn't go that far--but it'd be a strain on too many nerves, alright." Vance frowned and rubbed his jaw, glancing at Daws. "Any other ideas where we could stash the patsy?"

Daws frowned." I'm not sure how loyal these guys are to their employers -- but if they're loyal enough to try and keep track of where they're held and report back later, then it better not be anyplace connected with us." She ran a hand through her hair. "I guess maybe a motel, like we did with Hubert -- better not use the same one, though. I know a couple likely spots."

"Okay. If you want to make the arrangements, go ahead and get a room for tonight. I don't know if we can move that fast, but we'd better be ready." Vance shrugged. "Call Rog if you need to go handle it in person. He'll give you a ride."

"I should be able to do it by phone." Daws said. "Better if we let someone a little more nondescript deal with the clerk in person, I think."

Vance nodded. "I've got any number of guys who can handle that, when we need it. Just let me know."
"So what's all this supposed to get us?" Handy asked. "We grab one of these lab guys, and Proteus takes his place--and then what?"

Daws sighed. "And then hopefully Proteus gets close enough to the big fish," She pointed at the photos of the real government scientists, "To get us some leverage."
She shrugged. "From what Proteus and I worked out, Cole must have some idea of the right places to put political pressure for stuff like this. If we can get him some details to work with -- stuff they can't afford to let get out -- then hopefully he'll know the people who just need a little leverage to shut this nightmare down for good rather than let that word get out."

Vance's expression darkened.
"And that's it? We just let them go their merry way--and probably start up new experiments somewhere else?" His fists clenched. "I can't let it go at that, Regina."

Daws studied him gravely for a moment, and then spread her hands. "What's the alternative, Jerod?" She asked quietly.

"We take them out," Vance growled. "We stop them from ever doing any of this again--because nobody else is going to. And you know it."
