Daws grinned wickedly. "Oh, yeah. That's how the Major and I first got to know each other."

Shroud grinned. "The rest of us think what you've got going with the Major is--well, kinda cute. He's not exactly that kinda guy around us, you know."

"Guess I've just got that effect on some people." Daws grinned crookedly. "Well . . . on one person, anyway."

Shroud chuckled and shook his head.
The two continued to make small talk for another forty minutes, until there was a light tap at the door. Shroud answered it, with his hand on his gun pocket--then smiled thinly and steped back, letting Proteus into the room.
The shapeshifter glanced interestedly around at the dingy motel furnishings. "I guess I'm not late."

Daws shook her head. "We're still waiting on Major Vance and our unwilling guest." She replied. "He called us right before we called you."

"Yeah, I guess it isn't the quickest operation, taking somebody somewhere they don't wanna go," Proteus acknowledged, taking a seat. "And I gotta warn you--picking up enough to fake somebody well isn't too quick, either."

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "We don't have days on end or anything -- but we'll give you as much time as we can. Hopefully it'll be enough."

"It'll have to be," Proteus said gravely.
Shroud looked interestedly at the shapeshifter. "You know, I did some acting in high school. I might've gone a lot farther with that, too, if I hadn't turned mutie. I've always admired the skill, though--and I bet you'd be better than anybody, if you went for it."
Proteus smiled thinly. "If you really want to be a good actor, try learning to avoid attention, instead of attracting it."

"Maybe that's why Mayor Cole didn't go into the family business." Daws noted dryly.

Proteus raised an eyebrow at Daws. "Speaking of which, did you ever get ahold of him?"

Daws sighed. "Of course not -- that'd make some part of this plan relatively easy. It looks like Vance and I are gonna have to pay him an impromptu visit once we get things taken care of here."

Proteus winced. "I don't envy you that. If the guy is so concerned about mutant welfare, you'd think he'd already have gotten wind of this. Especially since other people already have..." He frowned thoughtfully. "What about this 'Mutant Citizens Front'? That's not any of your people, is it?"

"No -- and lucky for them it's not. Padre'd have their skins if any of our people tried something that fool-headed." Daws frowned. "We still don't have any idea who it might be, either -- or what they might be planning."

"It's not gonna make my job any easier if those idiots are running around making trouble," Proteus muttered. "If you can do something to find 'em and pin them down, I'd feel a lot better."

"We'll do what we can, but I can't make any promises." Daws replied. "I've got Jai looking for anything the government might have on 'em, or any websites they might have themselves, but nobody I've talked to seems to have heard of 'em in the real world before they showed up a few days ago."

"They can't have just come out of thin air that way," Proteus mused. "I've seen plenty of mutant activist gangs come and go--even decades ago. And they never start out by trashing things. They start with a guy on a soapbox in a park, or at weekly meetings in an abandoned warehouse." He shrugged. "There's always somebody who begins it with talk... and there's gotta be a clue there somewhere."

Daws nodded. "I thought more or less the same thing. It could be they're from out of town -- sent in to start up a new cell by stirring up some trouble and publicity. I'll keep digging . . . but I'm not sure I'll turn anything up in time for it to be useful on our current problem."

"I just hope they don't crash the party while I'm undercover," Proteus muttered. "I'll have enough trouble keeping out of suspicion, without having to worry about the safety of some nutty interlopers."

"Yeah, that's about the last thing we need." Daws said with a sigh. "Padre's got some of the people from the parish trying to keep an eye out for these people, see if we can't get word to them to back off this particular project -- but who knows if it'll work."

There was a tap at the door then. Shroud stealthily rose and glanced out through the curtain, then opened the door. Major Vance, Nate, Handy, and two other burly mutants came in--the latter two carrying between them a squirming bundle that seemed to be emanating muffled curses.
"Special delivery." Vance threw down a knapsack he was carrying. "I brought masks, too. Figured we'd all want some anonymity, if we're gonna keep this joker alive." He glanced rather skeptically at Proteus.
The shapeshifter frowned slightly. "That's the deal, Major."
