"Yeah, it's not exactly what I think of as a good time." Daws shrugged. "But no sense borrowing trouble until we see how it does play out."

Vance looked at his watch. "We need to talk to our man in politics--like now. I'm not keen on sending Proteus into that clinic tomorrow if the golden boy doesn't think he can use whatever we find." He glanced at Daws. "Things'll be fine here. You up for paying a call?"

Daws nodded. "Sure -- just lead the way."

Vance nodded. He crossed the room and murmured a few quiet instructions to his watchdogs, then glanced at Proteus. "Hold down the fort, eh?"
"Sure." The shapeshifter tilted his head slightly toward Beaudry. "I'll study better without you two distracting everybody."
With a grim chuckle, the Major glanced at Daws, and they stepped out into the night.

Daws drew in a deep breath and glanced at Vance with a crooked smile. "Well, that went better than I thought."

"Hmph." Vance headed toward his car at the far end of the parking lot. "That probably means the rest of this business'll be a disaster. Something's gotta give somewhere."

"I'd make a crack about your optimistic attitude, but truthfully I think you're probably right." Daws said with a faint shrug, following him towards the battered car.

Vance drove to the neighborhood of Mayor Cole's apartment building, and parked in an alley a block away.
"Time for another rude awakening," he remarked, as he opened the passenger door for Daws.

Daws slid out of the car, smoothing down the fur on her face which had been mussed by the mask. "Yeah, well, it'll help him learn to think on his feet. He could use the practice."

"I hear that," Vance murmured.
They moved down side streets to the rear of the apartment building. Vance examined the doorknob of one of the service entrances, then smiled grimly at Daws.
"I think lockpicking is your department. Otherwise I'll just have to blow the lock off."

"I think something a bit more subtle might be in order in this case." Daws smiled and withdrew her lockpicks from within her coat. "I oughtta teach you how to do this one of these days -- you could always use a few more subtle skills."

The Major chuckled. "That's what I have you for."
He watched Daws pick the lock, and as she pushed the door open, he smiled wryly at her. "Most of the places we go, I'd take the lead for a reason--but since we don't quite expect anything to blast at us once we walk in, I guess the appropriate thing to say is 'ladies first'.

Daws grinned and stashed her lockpicks. "That's one of the things I love about you -- always a gentleman at the right moment."
She led the way through the rear corridor of the building to the service elevator and punched the button for Cole's floor.

Vance folded his arms and leaned one shoulder against the wall. "Well, Cole may not hear me coming, but he could hear you. Wonder if he's still awake."

Daws shrugged one shoulder as the elevator climbed. "Dunno. I wonder if he still reads people while he's sleeping." She grimaced slightly. "Don't guess that'd make for very restful dreams."

Vance frowned. "I don't know about him, but I notice when somebody comes into the room while I'm sleeping--no matter how quiet they are." He sighed. "The mental static makes it hard to fall asleep if I'm not alone."

Daws shot him a sympathetic look. "The more I learn about psychic powers, the happier I am I don't have 'em." She noted as the elevator came to a stop at Cole's floor.
The pair made their way down the hall to the Mayor's apartment and stopped outside the door. After a moment, Daws shrugged and glanced at Vance. "I guess he's not awake -- he'd have opened up by now." She reached into her coat and once again withdrew the lockpicks, bending over the doorknob.

Vance raised a bemused eyebrow at her. "I sorta thought we were going to knock. I'm not sure how smart it is to startle a telepath."

Daws glanced up at him, then back at the lockpicks with a slightly sheepish expression. "Good point."
She once again tucked the tools into her coat and rapped her knuckles against the door with a chagrined chuckle. "All this subterfuge is starting to wear off on me, obviously."

"Things are complicated enough already," Vance remarked, waiting for a reaction to Daws' knock.
