"Yeah, here's hoping." Daws replied, pulling on her own mask and gloves.

When they reached the motel room, Vance tapped a code on the door, then opened it and stepped in. He exchanged nods with his men, then turned to Beaudry. "How are you getting along?"

Beaudry glanced up at Vance and shrugged slightly. "No complaints from me," He said, "I've spent a lot more boring waiting periods in casting offices."

"A couple of your boys have been keeping him amused with their tricks," Proteus put in.
Vance grinned slightly at Beaudry. "Glad you're taking this so well. We've talked to our political contact--if we can get any useful information, he's prepared to use it, and he's going to do what he can to buy us time for that. Speaking of which..." He turned to Proteus. "He's gonna try to throw in wrench in the works with a health department inspection, checking into what actors are doing running a clinic. They'll be told you blew the whistle, so you shouldn't get pressured."

Beaudry frowned slightly and glanced at Proteus. "Uh, not to be a pain or anything, but . . . nobody at the clinic is gonna find out he was the whistleblower, right? 'Cause, well . . ." He grinned weakly, "He's me, y'know?"

Vance shook his head. "No. It'll be anonymous, and our man says he's going to get people he can trust on this." He paused. "He's a bigshot, Beaudry--we couldn't have anybody better placed on our side at this point."

Beaudry grinned weakly. "Well, that's . . . comforting. Relatively, anyway."

Vance turned to Proteus. "How's your 'study' coming?"
"Not bad." Proteus shrugged. "I think I could do a pretty good job by now."

Beaudry chuckled. "I envy anyone who can study for a role that quick." He said.

"Believe me, I take more time if I can get it," Proteus murmured. "But that's something we haven't got right now."

"You're too right about that, unfortunately." Daws said with a sigh.

"What does--uh, the big man--think he can do with any evidence if we get it?" Nate asked.

Daws shrugged lightly and leaned one shoulder against the wall. "He's gonna call in some favors, talk to some people. He thinks he can find someone who'll be embarrassed enough at the prospect of exposure to shut the project down."

"I'll be astounded if politics actually get something done, even in this case," Vance muttered. Then he shrugged. "He's even gonna see if Nocturne can keep a lid on the civil-unrest side of things."
Nate gaped. "Nocturne?"
"It's not like we're giving up any information to him--remember, he found out about all this in the first place. If his influence will keep any mutant civilians out of harm's way, though... that's something."

"Even if they are kind of bone-headed mutant civilians." Daws interjected with a shake of her head. "Still . . . if they'll listen to anyone, it's probably him."

"Sooner or later, we've still got to find out who they are, and try to beat some sense into 'em," Vance muttered. "If they've gotten in the way once, they could do it again."

Daws made a faint scoffing noise. "Forget could -- with our luck, they will."

Vance sighed and sat down, glancing speculatively at their nominal captive.
"I'm a little curious, Mister Beaudry. When these scientists came along and asked you--an actor--to do a few days' work in a clinic for mutants... didn't you have any misgivings about what they were up to?"

Beaudry hesitated for a moment, then shrugged. "Honestly . . . yeah. A few."
"Then why'd you take the job?" Daws asked.
The actor ducked his head sheepishly. "There's a lot more actors in this City than there are jobs. I wasn't gonna make rent this month if I didn't do something."

Vance sighed. "Yeah. Well, there's a lotta mutants who can't get work to make the rent, too--just because they don't look like other people. And they're the ones who'll be flocking to this so-called clinic." He shook his head. "For some of our kind, giving up everything they are looks an awful lot like the only alternative to starving."
