Daws nodded. "There's not a lot of time before the clinic opens, either. That vandalism won't keep them closed for long."

"I have no intention of allowing them to open," Tiernan muttered. "If we find no other options... then the first deluded patients to line up outside that clinic will find no one there."

Daws frowned. "It'd be tricky to stop the place in a way that wouldn't implicate mutants." She mused quietly. "The norms would panic just as much over 'mutant terrorists' wrecking a 'medical clinic' as they would over mutants fighting in the street."

"There are ways to proceed quietly--for us," Tiernan replied. "Teleportation, phasing, invisibility, electrical disruption of surveillance systems... The staff can be made to disappear, without leaving evidence. That will at least be another delay in their plans. Mutants may be suspected, but they won't be able to prove it." He shrugged. "It's hardly an ideal course, but it's one more option, as a last resort."

Daws nodded. "I'll keep nosing around, see if I can turn anything else up -- about the clinic or these Mutant Citizens Front people. Maybe I'll stumble on something useful."

"As will my people," Tiernan nodded. "I'm considering whether a meeting with Mayor Cole might be useful. As it is, it would be difficult for him to ignore what's happening--but perhaps I should make sure he's giving it proper attention."

Daws grinned ferally. "Probably wouldn't hurt -- that's what he's there for, right?"

"It's quite a nuisance having to constantly remind him of that," Tiernan replied archly, and leaned back slightly in his chair. "Very well... keep trying, Miss Dawson. If I learn anything I feel you could follow up on, I'll inform you."

"And I'll do the same." Daws stood and retrieved her fedora. "Good morning, Mister Tiernan."

"Good morning," Tiernan said distractedly, already reading through Daws' folder of information again.

Daws nodded and slipped out of Tiernan's office. It seemed that Tiernan's plans were no more concrete than the Resistance's, at least for now.
Of course, we can't do much until we know more. Daws mused glumly. Here's hoping Proteus has better luck than Tiernan's people have had . . .
