"Yeah. Just..." Proteus smiled thinly, and lowered his voice. "I told you what's on my mind. I mean, snooping around in stuff like this is enough to make anybody nervous."

"Okay." Steph nodded and hefted the ream of paper slightly. "Well, uh, I figured I'd put this in with the printer. Makes more sense than having it in my desk."

"Yeah." Proteus grinned. "Maybe you should see if Mike needs dusting. I'm afraid he and his cards are gonna mummify before this gig is over."

Steph laughed. "It wouldn't surprise me. He'll have more to do once we actually open." She grinned teasingly. "Then I guess it'll be your turn to sit at your desk and play solitaire."

"I never play cards alone," Proteus retorted. "Anyway, if I end up sitting around twiddling my thumbs, I dunno... Maybe I'll ask if I can cash out early."

Steph rolled her eyes slightly. "I'm sure that would go over great."

Inwardly, Proteus agreed with Steph. Outwardly, he shrugged.
"It's good enough pay for being bored. I just don't know if it's worth being, you know... nervous."

Steph pursed her lips and glanced at Voegel's door. "I dunno. They seemed pretty big on that 'full-time contract' part of the hiring."

The information was interesting, if nothing the resistance hadn't already guessed. Proteus wondered from Steph's expression if Voegel had done the hiring.
"Well, I figure it can't hurt to ask," he answered. "Like I said--if I really get stir crazy."
He grimaced. "And that's assuming that mutant group doesn't smash the whole place even worse and put us all outta work."

"Yeah." Steph glanced back over her shoulder towards the reception area. "I just hope they don't try and smash the windows. I'm the one with the desk in the line of fire, after all." She said, in a forced-light tone.

Proteus frowned, reflexively glancing back toward the reception area and the front desk. Whatever happened--and whoever might try to make trouble--he didn't want the girl to get hurt.
"Have you asked about moving the desk?" he asked. "I mean, there are those potted ficus or whatever they are off to the side, and that bookshelf. You oughta be able to arrange things where the desk has got some more cover."

Steph brightened. "Hey, that's a really good idea. I'll have to ask . . ." She glanced thoughtfully at Voegel's door, then grinned crookedly. "Maybe I'll ask Dr. Cohen. I'm pretty sure he won't have a problem with it."

"Sure. If he gives it the okay, and you want some help pushing furniture around, let me know." Proteus grinned. "It's not like I have anything better to do today."
Besides, the more I'm around out front to see who drifts in, the better.

Steph grinned crookedly. "Thanks, Beaudry. I might take you up on it." She turned and made her way down the hallway towards the back office occupied by Mike's desk and the copy machine.

Proteus frowned; that conversation had done nothing to help point him to his own office. After a brief moment's consideration, he sidled down the hallway to another office that had seemed to contain nothing more interesting than some spare furniture.
On the desk, there were a handful of papers covered with neatly typed-out, imperiously medical-sounding Q&A entries--some of them matching verbatim Beaudry's statements in the newspaper. These were clearly the scripts he had been working from, and Proteus presumed he had found his post.
He sat down at the desk to collect his thoughts. His exploration of the clinic would have to continue; if they were going to make a show of giving some mutants a false cure, there had to be an examining room equipped with all the necessary props to make it look legitimate. It frightened him a little to think about what other tests the doctors might do at the same time.

About twenty minutes passed without incident; then the sound of the front door chime and several voices came from the reception area. After a moment Steph poked her head through the door of Beaudry's office, frowning worriedly at Proteus. "Uh, Beaudry? There's . . . there's some people out here who want to talk to everyone."

Proteus raised an eyebrow, trying to look more surprised than he felt. Probably Cole's friends from the Health Department...
"You camouflage the tunnel entrance--I'll burn the forged identity papers," he quipped, suppressing a grin and trying to make the joke sound like gallows humor.

Steph smiled thinly in spite of herself and glanced wincingly in the direction of Voegel's door. "Just don't get in the Kommandant's way." She murmured.

"Jawohl," Proteus returned flippantly, with a small salute. Then he stepped out of his pseudo-office and made his way to the front desk, to meet the new variables who had just added themselves to the scene.

There was a group of five people standing in the front area of the clinic, led by a tall, somewhat rumpled man and a shorter, severe-looking woman. All of them were carrying clipboards. The tall man blinked placidly at Proteus as he entered the reception area.
"Ah. Good morning."
