"More or less, yeah." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "Between that and Cole trying to pin down that crooked police commissioner -- hopefully we can get some idea of who the real movers are here."

Nate frowned. "And if we do find that out--supposing Cole can't get the plug pulled on them with political pressure?"
There was a moment's grim silence. Proteus looked skeptically at Vance, who folded his arms and scowled.
"We'll figure that out when the time comes," the Major said carefully.

"We've got too much trouble as it is." Daws said evenly. "No sense borrowing any more."

"What about these two?" Proteus asked, tilting his head toward Steph and Beaudry.
Vance shrugged. "We asked Cole to keep some of his Hollywood contacts in mind. At this point..." He glanced at the two humans. "I can't say I'm optimistic about just putting things back they way they were for 'em. But starting over is better than being dead--which is almost positively what they'd have been before long if we hadn't butted in."
Proteus nodded. "I also want to know about the fella named Mike... Whether he got out okay."

Beaudry frowned, looking suddenly very sober. "Oh, man. It never even occurred to me that . . . he might be that one guy who didn't make it."
"It did to me." Steph murmured.

"We don't know that yet," Vance said encouragingly. "There's still some people in the hospital, and he may be one of them. We'll let you know as soon as we find out."
He tilted his head, regarding the two humans thoughtfully. "If you know about any other hired actors on the job who just weren't there this morning, you might save their necks by telling us about 'em."

Steph twisted her fingers together thoughtfully. "There's Chris Stanley . . ." She said after a moment. "He called in sick this morning. If anyone else is an actor, I don't know about them -- but I guess some of the doctors might be. Maybe."

"There was a doctor named Cohen who seemed pretty decent," Proteus recalled. "Or at least he didn't give people the creeps like the others. If he was a real doctor and not an actor, I kinda wondered whether he actually knew the whole score about his pals."
Vance raised an eyebrow. "I'll keep that in mind, and let you know if we find out anything about him."

Steph shivered slightly and looked up at Vance. "If you're looking for the people who knew what was really going on," She said, "I don't see how Doctor G. could possibly have been anything but one of the people you're after."

Vance nodded. "We've definitely got our sights set on him... especially if he's one of our own kind."
"I couldn't tell that." Proteus frowned. "But maybe Cole could, if he could finagle a way to meet him."
"Risky. For all we know, this Doctor G. himself might have some power that'd pick up other mutants. Maybe that's part of their screening process."
Proteus shrugged. "He didn't find me out. Telepaths may not be able to read me--but that fact itself would be enough to make one suspicious."

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "We might want to keep it in mind as a fallback, if nothing else. It is risky -- but if the other things we've got in mind don't get us anything useful, it might be a risk we'll have to consider taking."

"Well, we've got ourselves quite a handful of leads now--and probably a little time to run 'em down. On the whole, I'd say we're in a lot better of a position than we were this morning." Vance nodded to Proteus. "We've got you to thank for that."
The shapeshifter shook his head. "Thank Steph. They'd be taking me apart by now if it wasn't for her." He smiled thinly at the young woman.

Steph returned the smile and ducked her head. "Oh, um . . . I mean, I didn't do anything all that impressive."
"Maybe not to you." Daws interjected. "There are a lot of people in this city who wouldn't stick their neck out for a mutant they'd known for years -- let alone one they just met this morning."

"Especially not in the middle of a panic like that," Nate added. "Heck, most people would've thought Proteus was the bomber himself and run screaming to the cops."
Proteus smiled wryly and rubbed the back of his head. "I'll leave the sabotage to you and your dad."

Daws grinned crookedly. "Well, we've all got our unique talents to contribute." She said. "Some inherently more sneaky than others."

Proteus looked momentarily thoughtful.
"Say, if you went by Doctor Ollivard's place... Did you get to see Doctor Van Linden?" he asked. "Is she doing any better?"

Daws smiled thinly. "We saw her for a minute, yeah. Actually, she squeezed Alex's hand -- Caddy says that's a good sign."

Proteus nodded. "I visited a few days ago, before all this got started. Glad to hear she may be doing better." His expression darkened slightly. "Though I won't exactly be relieved until we find out if she's okay in other ways."
Nate shrugged. "After this long, all that excess energy or whatever wouldn't still be in her system, would it?"
"From my experience, it would." Vance scowled around his cigar. "Energy casters don't just run down like a battery left on the shelf too long. I wouldn't bet it's any different for her."

Daws frowned. "If that's the case . . . I wonder what it would mean for Miriam, having all that bottled up inside her like that."

"No sense jumping to conclusions. She may be burning it all off just in recovering... It might even be what's kept her going this long." Vance smiled flatly and gestured to his blind eye. "When this happened, and I manifested, something like that went on inside me--I probably wouldn't have made it otherwise."
