Daws flipped open the folder and thumbed through the papers inside. "There's a couple of photos of night nurses," She said, "And an intern who works that shift on that floor. All of 'em pretty nondescript."

Proteus reached for the folder. "I'll take the intern. If somebody asks me any questions, at least I'll have an excuse for being clueless."
"Speaking of excuses, could Caddy suggest any halfway decent ploy to have a few of my men around?" Vance asked.

Daws shrugged. "Unfortunately it's too late at night for regular visiting hours, but there's been cops and reporters in and out of the place since they brought Voegel and the other guy in. A little extra traffic shouldn't attract too much notice -- especially if you happen to have some fake police IDs tucked away somewhere."

Vance smiled flatly. "We can manage that."
"So how exactly does all this go off?" Nate asked.
His father turned to Proteus. "I guess the details are up to you."
"It shouldn't be much different than when I got you away from Nocturne." Proteus settled back, looking somewhat thoughtful. "I'll go in, and pretend to be this intern if I can--unless he's around the same area I am, and then I'll just have to be somebody else quick. When they're ready to move Voegel, I'll... well, find a place to give his escort a little nap, and take charge of him myself. I'll make him look like somebody else, so I can wheel him out without anybody realizing what's up."
He frowned. "It'd help a lot if you have any more of those nasty little hypos Tiernan's people use."
Vance nodded. "No problem. One of those things has enough knockout doses for about six people, so you can use it on Voegel and anybody else in your way."

Daws nodded. "Once you get him out of there, the next step is getting him to the Valiant Motel. I had Veeru book the reservation -- 'Thompson' is the name."

"Check," Vance murmured. "Nate, we'll get you and a couple of the boys into the hospital for backup, too--just in case anything gets out of hand for Proteus."
The shapeshifter smiled wryly. "It can't be harder than walking past Nocturne's creeps with you slung over my shoulder, half-dead."
Vance twitched. "I can't argue with that."
"What about us, Jerod?" Handy asked.
"You'll be the getaway driver, as usual. As for me..." Vance shrugged. "I'll stick with you, just because I can't stand not being at least close to the action. If anything goes wrong enough for Proteus and Nate to get chased--well, I can certainly provide cover."

"And I guess with my striking good looks, I'm probably better off away from the action as well." Daws said with a wry, resigned sigh.

Vance grinned at her. "I could use the company. You know I get nervous when Nate's not in my line of sight."
Nate sighed. "Aw, Dad..."

Daws grinned wickedly at Vance. "Well, I'd hate for anything to upset your delicate nerves, Major." She said teasingly. "Guess I'll stick with you so Nate can do his job."

"So who's going in with me?" Nate asked.
Vance shugged noncommittally. "You pick your team. Take guys who can blend in, but still have solid defensive powers--you can't walk into a hospital with weapons." Catching a humorlessly expectant look from Proteus, he added, "And make it non-lethal force."

Daws nodded. "Jai's working on the security systems as we speak. He doesn't think the cameras will be any trouble, but if it looks like he's going to have difficulties he's going to at least take out the two-way frequency they use for the security guys' radios."

Nate nodded. "Here's hoping he doesn't have any trouble. With any luck, nobody'll ever notice us at all while we're there--but they're sure to check the footage when they figure out Voegel's missing. That's one way you don't want to see your face on TV."
"Does Cole know we're going to move on this tonight?" Vance asked Daws.

Daws nodded. "I left him a message. Couldn't get too specific, but I imagine once word gets out he'll put the pieces together for himself." She frowned. "It'd be a help if we could get him to help us pick Voegel's brain."

"I would've liked it if he could have found someplace else for the cops to be--but we'll take what we can get," Vance muttered. "Okay. Nate, go round up your team. You might as well bring 'em back here for the last briefing."
"Right," Nate said briskly, and went out.
Sid looked around the table. "Anythin' I can do, 'sides help babysit those actors?"

"It's kind of hard to say at present." Daws said. "Depending on how things end up going with this Voegel guy . . ." her glance flicked momentarily to Proteus and then away once again, and she shrugged. "We might end up needing a hand of some kind."

The corners of Sid's mouth turned down, and he also shot a glance at Proteus. "Uh-huh."
Proteus smiled grimly. "If you'd rather not have my help--"
"Don't say that," Vance cut him off quickly. "Without you, there'd be no way at all to do this that wasn't sure to get ugly."

"If we managed to pull it off at all." Daws added. "We're still on a timetable with all of this."

"It shouldn't take Nate more than half an hour to get back here," Vance remarked.
True to the Major's prediction, Nate was back in just over twenty minutes. With him were three veterans of the Mount Bliss raid--Flash, Shroud, and Void--as well as Bender, whose talent for near-invisibility would make up for his lack of offensive powers.
Nate set a satchel on the table. "I rounded up five of those hypos. They're filled and ready to go." He handed Proteus one of the devices. "You twist that notch at the bottom to change the dosage--but it's set for 'nice long nap', so don't worry about that. All you have to do is jab it into the skin. The pressure of the stab does the rest."

"One useful thing Tiernan's done for us, anyway." Daws remarked wryly. "Although I don't exactly envy anybody on the receiving end."

Proteus grimaced at the hypo, holding it between finger and thumb. "It may not be lethal, but I still don't like it one bit. The people at the hospital are only doing their jobs." He raised a hand before Vance could argue. "I know, it has to be done. And I'll do it--just carefully. I don't want anybody hurt."
Vance made a slightly dissatisfied noise, but he turned to Daws. "Have we got Caddy on standby? We don't know what kind of shape Voegel's gonna be in."
