"We'll save the full debriefing until you're up to it," Vance said gravely to Cole, arms folded. "For now, I just want to know one thing: do we have a shot?"

Cole took a deep, shuddering breath and opened his eyes. "Yes, Major." He said quietly. "I think we do."

"Okay..." Vance resisted a grim smile, and patted Cole's shoulder. "Okay. Get some rest. If sleep would help any, we've got the next room over--just don't forget any of what you just worked so hard for."

Cole shook his head with a thin, bitter laugh. "No chance, Major."
The telepath rose unsteadily to his feet, wincing. "Give me a few hours, then. See if I can . . . pull myself together."

"Yeah... Handy, go unlock the other room for him," Vance added to his confederate. Handy nodded and guided Cole out, fumbling in his pockets for his keys.
The Major turned back to Caddy. "If you need anything more for Voegel, say the word."

Caddy shrugged, glancing at the unconscious captive. "There's not a lot I can really do for him here, unfortunately." He replied. "Keeping him quiet and relatively still, I guess, and monitoring his heartrate periodically."

"Well, if I read His Honor right, I think we're through agitating him," Vance remarked. "Not that he won't keep on putting up a fight, but I'd say the brain-draining is over with."
"Now you've only got to decide what to do with him," Proteus said pointedly.
Vance sighed. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We can't do anything about him until after we've put our new intel to work, anyway."

"Right. Which I guess has to wait until Cole can give it to you." Caddy grimaced. "Sorry I couldn't do more for him -- but mutation-related migraine symptoms are notoriously hard to medicate. Something to do with how a mutant metabolism deals with stress -- there's research, but not a lot of progress towards anything new on the treatment front."

"I don't envy him," Vance agreed grimly. "We won't bother him till he's ready to talk--so I guess we won't have much else to do for tonight."

"Guess not." Caddy shrugged. "Well, I can stick around until tomorrow night, at least -- I'm on shift then. Don't know how much help I'll be in the event he has another incident -- but any doctor is better than no doctor."
He grinned crookedly, "And I'm better than just any doctor, if I do say so myself."

Vance smiled tiredly and clapped Caddy on the shoulder. "You've got that right."
He turned to Sid, who was hovering a bit uselessly at the edge of the room. "You might as well head on home, Sid. I think we've got everything covered here for the night."
Sid glanced at his watch, and shrugged. "Still not so late. I think I'll check in at the Paragon first... an' then see if Foxy needs anythin' at the Doc's house." He looked at Caddy. "Anythin' ya want me ta tell Hubert?"

Caddy grinned. "Not to burn the place down while I'm gone, I guess." He sobered a bit, and added "And tell him to contact me if there's any change with Miriam's condition. He's taken over watching her while I'm here."

Sid grew more pensive himself at that, and nodded. "Yeah, okay. See ya, fellas."
Vance gave a halfhearted wave as Sid went out the door, then looked around for Daws.

Daws slipped into the room as Sid was leaving, glancing from the unconscious Voegel to Vance. "How'd it go?" She asked. "Cole looked like death warmed over."

Vance made a face. "Eh. Cole had to get... kinda pushy. It was a little disturbing. I think he's got more brain-force than we thought, but he just doesn't want to use it." He shrugged. "Voegel was upset enough about it to give himself another heart flutter or something--but from what little Cole said, it sounds like he got us some intel to work with. I told him to take a rest before we debrief him."

"Guess that makes sense." Daws said. She shot a look at Proteus and lowered her voice. "I suppose we still have to figure out what we're doing with our 'guest', huh?"

"Yep," Vance muttered, in a tone that fully expressed his displeasure at that prospect. "And the only thing we know is what we can't do with him."

Daws sighed. "Well, cross that bridge when we come to it, I guess. At least we got some useful information out of this whole ordeal."

"Yeah. And if we have to turn Voegel loose anyway, we can't do that until after... well, whatever we end up doing with that new information." Vance scowled. "Not that our kidnapping him in the first place wasn't a big enough tipoff for his friends to expect trouble."

"Which they were probably expecting anyway, with the explosion." Daws sighed and perched on one arm of the room's single armchair. "I guess the best we can hope for is that wherever they're holed up isn't another fortress."
