Vance frowned. "I've got pickpockets, but not safecrackers, so we'll have to do it the hard way. Kindle can cut through with his personal blow-torching, but it's time-consuming and tricky... I don't think Scythe is strong enough to tear a safe open."
"My specter might be," Nate admitted. His father gave him a you-never-told-me-that look of mildly unsettled surprise.

Daws raised an eyebrow at that, then nodded. "Okay. I guess it might not be a bad idea to bring Kindle along as a backup, but we should be able to get into it one way or another." She glanced at cole. "What does Voegel have in the way of security?"
"Just the usual things one would expect for an apartment." Cole said. "Alarms on the door and windows that trigger a call to a private security firm, plus a motion sensor in the office tied into the same system."
Daws made a faintly derisive noise. "Kid stuff. I'd expect more from someone in his line of work."

"Especially after the MCF vandalism," Vance muttered. "And that's still something else we need a lead on--who's behind that business, and the bombing."

"I'm afraid Voegel's not much help. His employers have people looking into the MCF, but they don't know much more than my office does." Cole said.
"As for how much they know about the bombing . . ." The telepath shrugged. "No doubt they've got some ideas, but Voegel hasn't been in any condition to be part of the investigation."

"If they're trying to run down the MCF, I guess they didn't do any of the damage themselves just to get public sympathy, after all. That'll mean there really is another faction out there, looking for a fight." Vance frowned. "Another complication we don't need."

"Yeah. Here's hoping they're not smart enough to figure out what we have -- or dumb enough to try anything if they do." Daws sighed and spread her hands.
"Alright, so our first move is to get into Voegel's place tonight, grab his keycard and whatever else we can get our hands on that might be useful. After that?"

"The next big, obvious move... is hit that administrative headquarters, I guess." Vance rubbed his eyes, his stress showing for a moment in his face and posture. "But we've got to chase every scrap of information we can get first. We need to hit up Jai, Sergeant Bell, and anybody else we can get ahold of for clues about this place."

Daws nodded. "Makes sense. I've got Bell keeping his ears open already. I'll do the same with Jai, and I've got a few other contacts who might be able to tell us a little bit. It's worth a shot, anyway."
"I can put my resources to work for you as well." Cole said quietly. "It's across state lines, so some of my usual channels aren't going to be available -- but I should be able to get you something."

"And I'll see who I can talk to," Vance agreed. "Unfortunately, my sources tend to deal in intel on subjects that are a little less... official. But at least we know what we're doing tonight."
He turned to Caddy. "Doc, I know you've got a life elsewhere. Just tell us whatever you need to put Voegel on the shelf for the rest of the day, so you're not tied down here."

Caddy grinned weakly and shrugged. "Just keep him quiet and keep an eye on his heartbeat, is about the best thing I can prescribe. And it's probably best if you administer some antibiotics, as well. In a hospital I'd hold off on those until an infection actually developed -- but this isn't exactly the most sterile environment I've been in lately, so, you know. An ounce of prevention and so on."
He drifted his medical bag over and withdrew two bottles of fluid and a handful of single-use syringes, which he placed on the table. Then he took out his prescription pad and scribbled a few notes. "Here ya go." He tore off the sheet and handed it across to Vance. "Those dosages ought to keep him sedated and infection-free, for the time being anyway."

"Okay." Vance looked over the prescriptions, holding them away from his good eye to peer at them studiously. "Any advice on feeding him?"

Caddy frowned thoughtfully. "Stick to fairly bland foods -- nothing too spicy or greasy. Broth and that sort of thing. Actually, liquids would probably be easier on you as well -- less hassle to feed him that way. And make sure he stays hydrated as the day goes on, too -- that's especially important with the morphine in his system."

"Check. My people are gonna be pretty busy, so I'll ask Sid if he can drop by with something at feeding time." Vance gave Nate a devious look. "Unless you're up for more KP duty."
Nate made a horrified face, and shook his head vehemently.

"I'd say Voegel's not worth putting Nate up to any extra work." Daws said.

Vance grinned. "Nah. I need him to set up the team for our little excursion tonight. Figuring on the three of us, Flash, Kindle... and maybe Blizzard. If he can chill down Voegel's safe far enough, it might be easier to crack."
He glanced at Daws. "Anybody else you'd recommend?"

Daws shrugged. "I think that's about as many people as we want to try taking into one guy's apartment without getting detected. Unless you've got someone whose specialty is taking down alarms without much fuss -- but any one of us can probably do that."

Vance grimaced. "Used to rely on Volt for that," he murmured, and a glimpse of pain crossed his face at the thought of the lost follower and comrade.
Then he shook his head briskly. "We can take Rog along--he may at least be able to pick up on any radio signals we don't want getting out. Not a bad idea to leave someone outside as a lookout, anyway."

"Right." Daws leaned back in her chair with a shrug. "Well, I guess that's a step in the right direction, anyway. And maybe we'll luck out and come across something incriminating while we're there."

"If these creeps are cocky enough to hang out in an office suite in Jersey, we can hope so." Vance sighed, shrugged, and glanced back at Cole. "I know how rough all this was for you--and believe me, we appreciate it. Ask for whatever you need, and if we can do it, you've got it."

Cole smiled wanly. "All I need is time -- time to rest, and try to adjust to everything I saw in Voegel's mind." He shuddered and closed his eyes briefly. "I'm sure you'll need to know more if you decide to go in there. Given the chance to sort through what I saw, I should be more able to help you with that."
