As arranged, Daws returned to the motel later that evening, to share what she'd learned from her contacts and to plan the break-in at Voegel's apartment.
She swept off her fedora as she entered the room, gesturing at the still-unconscious Voegel. "Our mad scientist give you guys any trouble?"

Sid, who had arrived an hour earlier, grinned up at Daws from the chair beside Voegel's bed. "Nah. We hadda wake him up long enough ta pour some broth down his throat, an' he did some tryin' ta get loose again. Once he figured he still wasn't goin' anywhere, though--he went back ta sleep on his own."
"If he's not playing possum," Vance remarked cynically, giving the captive scientist on the bed a glare. "Not that he could do anything about our plans even if he eavesdropped on 'em, but he's still sneaky enough to try."

"Yeah." Daws set her fedora and the case of housebreaking tools she'd brought with her on the dresser and settled backwards onto a wooden chair, crossing her arms over the back. "And mean-spirited enough to give us grief about them just for the sake of it -- no matter what that might do to that faulty ticker of his."

"He might have faked it for a while, but I think he's really asleep now," Proteus said grimly. "He's not a well man."
Vance waved a hand to the small table. "Anyway, Sid brought us dinner, straight from the kitchen at the Paragon. The rest of us had some already. You might as well enjoy it before we start talking about what laws we're gonna break."

"Yeah -- thanks, Sid." Daws grinned and reached for a fork and one of the tinfoil-covered plates. "I think better on a full stomach, y'know."

Nate folded his arms and leaned his hip against the windowsill. "Brainstorming hasn't done us much good since you left."
"I made a few calls," Vance elaborated gloomily, "but I don't exactly have any cops' numbers in my rolodex. Closest I had was a street hustler who used to do his thing around Voegel's neighborhood, but he hasn't been down there in months. And I couldn't get ahold of my mole with the Bat."

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "I didn't have a whole lot more luck than that, at least as far as Voegel's apartment is concerned. I got ahold of Jai and put him on the trail of that business complex, and I talked to Bell again. In between death threats, he told me the beat cop watching Voegel's place is basically just cruising by in a black-and-white every hour or so -- not the tightest security."

"Figures," Vance murmured. "From what I know, the neighborhood is nice enough they don't have much of a problem with crime--but not so ritzy they're a target. No, our problem is gonna be whatever Voegel and his pals have rigged up privately at his place."

"And that could be anything." Daws paused with a forkful of pasta halfway to her mouth and shot a baleful glance at the unconscious Voegel. "I suppose it's a waste of our time trying to get any details out of him."

"Not without Cole here--and I think we've put him through enough already for one day." Vance irritably jammed a cigar into his mouth. "He told us Voegel's got regular alarms set up by a private security company, and motion sensors in his office. We can't just assume that's all there is, though."

"Right." Daws frowned. "Wouldn't surprise me if his friends have their own watch set on the place. They know somebody took Voegel -- they'd have to assume the same somebody would show up to go through his stuff sooner or later."

"Maybe Flash can help us there," Nate considered. "If we can find someplace close by that we won't be spotted from, maybe he can take us inside one at a time."
Vance frowned around the cigar. "It'd be pretty taxing on him. I'll ask him, though." To Daws he added, "He and the other boys we discussed this morning are on their way."

Daws nodded. "Did you come up with someone to take out the security systems? I've got Timothy standing by in case we need him, but he's not all that used to stealth operations."

Vance scowled and shrugged. "Nobody more than I suggested this morning. Like I said... we haven't exactly got a replacement on hand for Volt's talents."

Daws grimaced. "Yeah."
She set her empty plate aside with a shrug. "Well, Timothy's got a pretty good head on his shoulders. He should work out okay."

"He was with us on the Murfeeston Bridge," Vance recalled. "I'll put my confidence in any of your people that stood up to that."

Daws smiled faintly at that and nodded. "Okay. I'll give him a call and let him know we'll want him along."
She stood and crossed the room to the phone, dialed Timothy's cell phone, and exchanged a few quiet words with him before hanging up.
"He's in." She said, returning to her chair. "Shouldn't take him too long to get here."

"Okay. Rog oughta be here with Flash and Kindle any time now." Vance smiled crookedly. "Any stirrings outta the Bat today? I'm kinda surprised he didn't call you up in a tizzy over Voegel's kidnapping by somebody who wasn't him."

"Not a peep." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "He's been playing this one pretty close to the vest. I'm not sure that's good news for us. It could mean he's waiting to make a move until he can get more out of his other sources, or it could mean he's planning something and doesn't want too many people -- yours truly included -- in on it."

"Yeah. When Cole recovers from last night, we still need to send him back into the belly of the beast, to figure out what's going on in Tiernan's head." Vance shook his head. "We've got more than enough unknowns on our hands. I don't want us running into his killers in mid-operation again--they way we did at Mount Bliss."
