Timothy grinned. "Thanks for the warning, Major." He shrugged and buried his hands in his pockets. "Anyway, that was a long time ago -- not to mention a long way from here."

A few minutes later, Flash appeared on a fire escape across the street, and sauntered back over to join them.
"I've got my spot. There's a utility room on Voegel's floor--unless you want to hit the basement instead." He grinned crookedly. "I thought somebody might like to play with the circuit breakers down there."

Daws grinned. "Well, that'd be one way to interfere with the security system -- of course, it might also be a way to draw attention to ourselves."

"Enough cops around already, with Voegel being AWOL," Vance muttered. "Let's make it the upstairs. I'd rather be as close to his apartment as we can."
He turned to Daws with a crooked grin. "Ladies first, of course."
Flash smiled at Daws and held out his arm. "Don't worry. Just think like you're giving me a hug, and it'll be over that quick..."
"And then the nausea hits," Vance retorted.

Daws pulled a face in Vance's direction. "Thanks for the warning, I guess."
She turned to Flash with a shrug and held out her arms. "Okay, then. No time like the present."

"Sure. Just relax--and you'd better close your eyes. It's kinda bright." Flash stepped up to Daws and wrapped his arms around her firmly. "Here goes..."
With that, the alley around them dissolved into a flash of light.
An instant later, the light faded, and their new surroundings swiftly faded into view. They were in the middle of a fairly small but well-organized room, filled with shelves and boxes of assorted equipment and supplies.
Flash pulled away from Daws, looking inquisitively at her. "You alright?"

Daws cracked one eye open and grimaced. "Little bit motion sick," She replied, "But not as bad as I was preparing for. I guess my sense of balance is working in my favor."

Flash nodded. "Okay, good. I've gotta go back for the others--so keep close to the wall. I'll be popping back in the middle of the floor here, and you don't wanna be standing there when I do."

Daws flinched. "Yeah, I'll take your word for that." She edged backwards until her back was to the wall by the storage shelving. "I'll stay put."

"Okay. Just sit tight." The teleporter grinned. "Back in a flash."
He vanished, but within a minute he reappeared in exactly the same spot--with Major Vance in tow.
The moment they had materialized, Vance lurched out of Flash's grasp and into the corner of the room. There he bent over, bracing his hands on the walls. He was breathing hard, and every exhaled breath was a thinly disguised groan.
Flash looked at Daws with a helpless shrug.

Daws grimaced sympathetically and rested one hand lightly between Vance's shoulderblades. "You weren't kidding, huh?"

Vance grunted and let out a deep breath. At last he gingerly pushed himself upright, wiping his sleeve across the thin film of sweat on his brow. He was pale, but his breathing had begun to quiet.
"I'll live." He waved a hand vaguely to Flash. "Get the others."
With one last sympathetic look, Flash teleported away, and Vance slumped against the wall beside Daws with a deep, sharp sigh. "I'd rather take on a squad of the Bat's goombahs than go through that."

"From what I can see, I don't blame you." Daws squeezed his shoulder and then buried her hands in her pockets with a shrug. "I didn't take it so bad -- my inner ears aren't exactly normal, and I'm guessing that worked in my favor."

"Lucky you." Vance straightened with a grimace. "If we get through this job without any trouble, I'm tempted to walk out of here on my own."
Flash reappeared then, to deposit Nate and quickly vanish again. The younger Vance stepped over to join his father and Daws against the wall, making a face and working his jaw uncomfortably.
"Hmph." He glanced at Daws. "I don't get it like Dad does, but it leaves a funny taste in my mouth."

"And the sci-fi movies always made it look so easy." Daws remarked with a shrug. "If only, huh?"

"I wouldn't know," Vance muttered. "I'm more for crime dramas."
At that moment Flash delivered Kindle, then was off again. The Scottish flamethrower did not look at all distressed by the experience of teleportation, and he shook his head wryly as he moved to the side.
"Ye see it's as I told ye, Major--it's nae trouble atall if ye've taken a good bracer of scotch."

Daws stifled a laugh. "Maybe I'll have to try that next time."

"You and me both--purely for medicinal purposes," Vance added.
Flash next returned with Timothy, but rather than disappear immediately, he waited a moment to see whether the young man had taken the passage well.

Timothy leaned back heavily against the nearest set of shelves, holding one arm tightly against his stomach and looking even paler than usual, but he managed to grin weakly. "Ugh. I was better at this in high school."
He waved one hand at Flash in a vague, reassuring motion. "I'll be okay in a sec."

With an apologetic shrug, Flash took off.
"He's probably not feeling wonderful himself right now," Vance remarked. "Carting around this many people is no joy for a teleporter."
