"I guess it wouldn't be." Daws said, "Especially not one at a time like this."

A moment later, Flash reappeared, with Roger as his latest passenger. Rog was unfazed--but this time it was Flash himself who stumbled slightly. Nate put out a supporting hand, as the teleporter shook his head sharply and rubbed his temple.
"I'll be fine," he asserted quickly, allowing himself to lean slightly on Nate's support. "Just gimme a couple minutes to catch up with myself."

"Take your time." Daws said. "I imagine we could probably go unnoticed in here for quite a while, if we really needed to."

"That's all of us, anyway," Vance observed, glancing over the group. "Flash, there's no telling yet if we'll need to go out the same way we got in. If you wanna stay here and rest while we do the whole job, we can manage."
"Nah," Flash murmured. "I might be able to help. I'll be fine, Major."
In all fairness, the teleporter did look as though he was recovering his equilibrium. Vance eyed him critically for a moment, then nodded. "Okay. I'll take your word."

Daws straightened from her slouch against the supply shelves. "Alright then. Flash, you said Voegel's place is down this hall?"

"Yeah. Down about five doors to the left." Flash frowned. "There isn't any sign of cops around, and no cameras I could see--but that doesn't mean there aren't any."
Vance reached into the small knapsack he had brought with him, and withdrew a handful of ski masks. "No such thing as too careful in this business."

Daws stifled a groan and rolled her eyes as she took a ski mask. "Someone really needs to invent a better version of these things." She remarked, tugging the clinging fabric down over the fur on her face.

"We could give you one of those opera masks--but I'm afraid a look at your ears would kinda narrow down the list of suspects." Vance grinned fondly at Daws before pulling on his own mask.

Daws wrinkled her nose at him behind her mask. "These are the downsides of one-in-a-million good looks, I guess." She replied lightly.
Timothy reached up out of habit to brush his hair back from his face, then turned the gesture into a tug at the side of his mask. "I guess I'm ready to go."

"Okay. Everyone else set?" Vance looked around, registering the nods and murmurs of the others, then nodded himself. "Here we go, then. Nate, summon up that specter of yours. I want it in place to intercept anybody we might run into--as long as you can keep it from being a klutz."
"I think I can get it through its head not to move unless we see somebody." Nate frowned and briefly concentrated, and his shadow came to life.
"Regina, have those lockpicks of yours ready," Vance added.

"Got 'em." Daws withdrew the small leather case in question from the inner pocket of her coat and held it up with a crooked grin. "I may not be able to get us in there quite as fast as Flash got us in here, but I should do alright."

"Let's go, then." Vance quietly opened the door, and the group of mutants slipped out of the storeroom one by one, with Nate's specter trailing behind them. The hallway was softly lighted, but there was no one to be seen as they moved to the fifth door down.
Besides a common deadbolt, there was a small keypad above the doorknob, and Vance grimaced.
"Nate," he whispered, and his son moved in to examine the electronic lock.

Daws glanced over Nate's shoulder with a grimace. "I might still be able to take care of the deadbolt, but there's nothing I can do about that."

"That's what Army training is for," Nate murmured, unfolding a small screwdriver from his pocketknife and beginning to unscrew the cover of the keypad.
His father grinned crookedly behind his mask. "We didn't have all this junk in the good old days, when I was coming up."

Daws grinned. "They weren't too common when Jack was teaching me lockpicking, either. Maybe I ought to have Nate give me some pointers."

"Used to think it was kind of silly..." Nate murmured, as he lifted off the keypad cover and gently teased a wire loose. "Wondered why I was supposed to study electronics, just to fight a bunch of jihadist desert rats with old Soviet guns... until my unit came across its first IED."
Vance scowled and shifted his weight; he was clearly uncomfortable with that topic, and to change it, he turned to Timothy. "Not picking up any kind of wireless signals from this gadget, are you, kid?"

Timothy cocked his head for a brief moment, then shook it. "No -- there are some inside the apartment, though. Cordless phone, TV, a couple other little gizmos besides the alarm system."

Vance raised an eyebrow. "If you can tell what they are, can you tell if any of 'em are some kind of alarm we might trip?"

Timothy frowned. "I can tell what things are by what frequencies they use." He said, "And there's three in there I don't recognize. They could be almost anything -- including backup alarms, I guess. I can put a block on everything in the apartment, just to be safe."

"Definitely." Vance gave Timothy a slightly quizzical look. "You got a limit to how long you can keep it up?"
