"This could be what brings them down for good." Daws finished.
Jai nodded. "I have already made copies of the videos to a secure drive." He said quietly. "The originals can be safeguarded that way."
He flinched and opened his eyes with a pained expression. "I . . . unless you need me to, Major, I would rather that someone else look through them."

"You and me both," Vance growled. Then his expression softened a little. "I have to do it, Jai... but no, not you. Just give me a set of copies on one of those drives."

Jai nodded wordlessly, looking relieved. Veeru tightened his grip on his brother's shoulder. "Should we move on to the next one?"
Jai took a quick deep breath and nodded, handing Veeru another of the flash drives and then closing his eyes.
After a moment, his mouth quirked in an odd, humorless smile. "Ah . . . and here's your 'booby-trap', Major Vance. Nasty little virus -- no," He held up a quick hand as Veeru moved to withdraw the drive, "I have it under control. They designed it for someone much slower than I am . . . give me a moment to see if there's anything of use hidden behind it."

"Don't get yourself or any of your equipment hurt," Vance said again, quietly. "You're a lot more valuable to us than twice this much intel."

Jai nodded faintly in acknowledgment, his concentration clearly focused on whatever was happening with the contents of the erstwhile drive.
After a few long moments of tense silence, Jai relaxed with a sigh and motioned for Veeru to remove the flash drive. "Nothing useful." He said. "It was not even an especially clever virus."

Nate frowned. "Maybe the whole reason that drive was in there with more important stuff was just to serve up the virus as a nasty little surprise."
"As long as there was nothing in it even you could've missed," Vance remarked uneasily to Jai. The Major's abiding distrust of computers had long bordered on outright loathing.

"I've copied and quarantined everything." Jai replied, opening his eyes. "And I will be sure to look it over again to be certain -- but I think you are right," He nodded at Nate, "And it was meant to trip up an unsuspecting intruder."

"You're really something," Vance said solemnly, looking around at the arrays of computer equipment around them. "I know you've been through rough times, Jai... but we'd sure be at a loss if you weren't the guy you are."

Jai smiled and inclined his head. "I'm glad I can be of help." He replied quietly. "That I can . . . make some good come out of it."
He made a faint pushing-away gesture with one hand, and straightened his back. "Anyway . . . let us see what is left on these last two drives."

"Ya figure any of this was stuff the mad scientists didn't have saved anywhere else?" Handy queried.
Vance frowned and shook his head. "I doubt it. They're too thorough not to back up everything--probably in quadruplicate."
"Unless they're really that paranoid of each other," Nate mused.

"They might be at that, Nate." Daws said, shrugging one shoulder. "If Voegel was lifting information on Doctor G's project, there's no telling what kind of paranoia might be at work."

"I'm all for that," Vance growled dangerously. "Any cracks they've got in their organization might just be cracks we can pry open."

"If we're lucky." Daws replied.
By now, Jai had finished scanning the first of the two remaining drives, and he opened his eyes with a shrug. "This one looks like copies of medical files." He said. "Some of them heavily censored."
"Might be copies of the ones we've already got at Caddy's." Daws said.

"Maybe." Vance shrugged. "We'll drop it back with Caddy in the morning--have him compare it with what he's got."

"Hopefully by then he'll be able to concentrate on it." Daws murmured, a trace of anxiety for Timothy making itself heard in her voice.
Jai handed the last of the flash drives to Veeru. "Here we are," He said, closing his eyes once again. "Let us hope for more useful information."

Vance nodded offhandedly to Jai (and futilely, since the younger man's eyes were already closed). Then the Major frowned at Daws and lowered his voice.
"I know." His expression hardened slightly. "Still sure you want your civilians playing this game, detective?"

Daws sighed quietly, running a hand absently through her hair. "I'm close to wondering, Major." She admitted after a moment's pause.
Then she glanced at Jai and Veeru. "But to tell you the truth, I don't think we could do anything to keep some of them out of it."

"Yeah," Vance said quietly and thoughtfully, following Daws' gaze. "And to tell you the truth... I'm not too sure where we'd be without 'em."

Daws smiled thinly. "Pretty lost, in this case." She replied. "You don't want to see me trying anything remotely computer-related."

"That puts us both in the same boat," Vance retorted.
