Cole followed the group to the door, giving them a parting nod before closing and locking it behind them.
Daws glanced at Vance with a shrug. "I guess that about wraps up our night's work, unless you can think of anything else that needs doing."

"There's plenty that needs doing," Vance growled. "But we can hardly do any of it until we get more information."
"And some sleep," Nate added, half-hopefully.
The Major shrugged. "I'll talk to Proteus about impersonating G in front of Voegel. If he agrees, we can do that tomorrow. I wanna set the stage a little first--let Voegel overhear a morning news report about how his place got robbed and trashed. It'll give him more reason to think we could've picked up G in a fight."

Daws nodded. "Makes sense. The more we set the scene, the more likely it is that Voegel will buy it -- and maybe give us something to go on."

"If Proteus'll play along. If it'd make him feel better, I might ask Caddy to come over and give Voegel's ticker another look." Vance shrugged, pushed open the door of the back stairwell--and stifled a yawn.
Nate grinned at his father. "You're not doing anything until you get some sleep, either."
"Well, just one thing." Vance paused on his way down the stairs, glancing at Daws. "Regina, you wanna call Caddy one more time, just to see how the kid is? I'll sleep better if I know he's stable."

Daws nodded and fished Vance's cell phone out of her pocket, punching in Caddy's number.
"Caddy? It's Daws . . . we're getting pretty close, yeah. Just wanted to call and check on Timothy." She fell silent for a long moment, listening intently to the doctor, before sighing. "Okay. Thanks, Caddy. We'll see you tomorrow."
She snapped the phone closed and shrugged. "The withdrawals are still doing a number on him," She reported, "But Caddy's got him under some light sedation, and that seems to be doing some good. It's gonna be a long night, but it doesn't sound like Caddy's as worried as he was earlier."

"I guess that's some comfort." Vance wearily continued the trudge down the stairs. "We'll drop you near your place, Regina. Then I'm going back to the Valiant Motel. I can sleep there after I see how Voegel is, and talk over our plan with Proteus."

Daws nodded. "All right." She shrugged. "I guess I'll meet up with you there tomorrow morning?"

Vance nodded. "After you get there, we can go to Caddy's to check up on the kid, and anything else they've found out. If Proteus is gonna impersonate G, it'd help to know all we can about his power. And we'll see if Caddy'll come out to give Voegel another checkup." He smiled wanly. "Still a lot to do before we get to the playacting--if we do at all."
They had reached the ground floor, and he pushed open the door to the back street, ushering his companions out.

"Yeah, well." Daws smiled thinly. "You know what they say about no rest for the wicked. Too bad that works out to mean not much rest for us, either."

The four mutants made their way to the car, and Vance drove to a point three blocks from Daws' apartment. He pulled over to the curb to let her out.
"Get some rest. We don't need to move too early in the morning--everybody's tired, and we'll need our wits to be sharp."

"Sure." She brushed her fingertips against his cheek in a brief, affectionate gesture. "Take your own advice, huh?"

"Trust me, I'll sleep." Vance patted Daws' hand on his cheek. "We'll see you tomorrow."
Nate and Handy chimed in with good-nights from the back seat, and the car pulled away, heading in the direction of the Valiant Motel.
