"That I can manage." Timothy's eyes closed for a moment, then fluttered open again. "You guys have a plan figured out?"

Vance sighed. "Well, the most important thing right now is figuring out anything useful from all the stuff we took last night. We've got people going after it from every direction. We're also gonna try to trick Voegel into telling us more, though." He grinned crookedly. "Proteus is gonna pretend to be Doctor G. For what it's worth, this ordeal of yours might've given us some helpful clues for that act."

"Heh." Timothy smiled crookedly. "Silver linings, right?"

"I'm still sorry we put you through this," Vance replied. He patted Timothy lightly on the shoulder. "Anyway, you just worry about getting yourself back on your feet. We'll let you know if anything exciting happens on the resistance front."

"Okay. And listen, Major -- don't be sorry. I knew this was dangerous when I signed up." Timothy sighed and closed his eyes. "Just get these guys."

"Bet on it." Vance squeezed Timothy's arm, then turned and stepped away from the table, looking to Caddy.
"I take it you haven't exactly had time to go through the medical files we took last night."

Caddy glanced up from his medical bag with an apologetic shrug. "Not yet, no. Sorry. Priorities, y'know. I should have some time now that things've died down.
"After I check out our surly pal at the motel, anyway." He snapped the bag shut and stood. "I'm ready to go when you are."

"Okay. We'll try to make it a quick housecall, and I'll have Handy bring you back here afterward." Vance led the way out of the examining room.
"Is Hubert up to keep an eye on Timothy, if he needs it?"

"Oh, yeah, absolutely." Caddy gestured in the direction of the kitchen. "He's camped out at the table with a pot of coffee and the Times, same as most mornings, but he'll be on top of it if anything happens."

Vance nodded, and led the way out to the car.
In a short time, the three mutants were again standing outside the room at the Valiant Motel. Vance paused on the doorstep and produced three ski masks, holding out two of them to Daws and Caddy.
"No fun, but we've still gotta be anonymous around Voegel," he said.

"Better than the alternative." Daws said with a shrug, pulling the mask down over her face.
Caddy gave his own mask a last tug by way of adjustment and spread his hands. "Okay -- ready to go, I guess."

Inside the room, they found Proteus sitting calmly in a chair, also masked; he could have used his shapeshifting power to shield his identity, but he preferred not to let on to Voegel that he was any different from the others. Voegel himself, looking considerably less at ease, was still tied up on the bed. A morning news program was chattering forth from a small portable radio on the table.
"Morning," Proteus said glibly. "The Grenadier's boys are fixing some breakfast in the next room over. And the Doc here," he glanced at Voegel, "has just been catching up on the news."

Voegel scowled sideways at Proteus, but made no comment as Caddy crossed the room and snapped open his medical bag.
The doctor glanced over his shoulder at Proteus as he withdrew his stethoscope. "How'd he fare overnight?"

"I guess about as well as anybody who's had to sleep tied up and has a lot on his mind," Vance retorted. "He didn't put up much fuss, anyway."

Caddy nodded at that and turned his attention to Voegel. "How's the pain?"He asked, fitting the stethoscope's earpieces into his ears and pressing the instrument to the captive scientist's chest.
Voegel shot him a venomous look, flinching away slightly from the contact of cold metal. "How do you think?"

Vance smirked. "If you don't like this doctor's bedside manner, Voegel, we might get you a new one..." He caught a look from Proteus, and added more dourly, "But your insurance might not cover that."

Voegel scowled blackly at Vance. "From the sound of things, you people have done enough to give my insurance company fits as it is."

"You mean redecorating your apartment? That wasn't our fault," Vance retorted glibly. "I'll tell you something, Voegel: it was your own friends who did that."

Voegel's scowl deepened, but he made no attempt to contradict Vance. Caddy tugged his stethoscope down around his neck.
"Well, your cardiac rhythm's not great, but it could be a lot worse." He said. "I assume you got your medication overnight with no problems?"
Voegel rolled his eyes. "Yes." He answered tersely.

"How about his other scrape-ups from the explosion at the clinic?" Proteus asked Caddy. "Those coming along okay?"
