Caddy nodded, gingerly checking the dressings on Voegel's burns and cuts. "They seem to be -- no evidence of infection. Keep him on that course of antibiotics I gave you just to be sure, though."

"Will do." Vance gave Caddy and Proteus each a significant look from beind his mask, then tilted his head toward the far side of the room.
"So do you think his nerves can stand a little shaking up?" he asked the doctor quietly, when they had moved out of Voegel's earshot.

Caddy sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, they should. I wouldn't sign off on anything as rough as last night got, but a conversation -- even a nerve-wracking one -- won't be enough to do him any damage."

Proteus frowned and sighed. "Okay, Doc." He turned to Vance. "Major, I'll pull the act you want. At least we'll see how it goes--but if it looks like Voegel's getting himself too worked up, the gag's off."
"Fair enough," Vance agreed.
The shapeshifter turned back to Caddy. "I don't guess you've had time to learn much about what happened to that boy last night. Still, medically speaking, is there anything you think I oughta know about pretending to be Doctor G?"

Caddy frowned thoughtfully. "From what Timothy told me, Doctor G had contact with his bare skin for quite a while before hitting him with the stuff, so it's obvious that he's got voluntary control over releasing it. I'm still trying to figure out if the initial unconsciousness is part of the body's reaction to the chemical, or if that's a secondary mutation of G's, but once it's in the bloodstream the toxin itself is a highly addictive stimulant."
He shrugged. "I don't want to speculate on anything he may or may not be able to do aside from what we know about -- so I guess that's about all I can tell you."

Proteus nodded thoughtfully, frowning. "The time I saw Doctor G at the clinic isn't much to go on, but I guess it'll have to do."
"You can stay around a little bit to see how Voegel and his heart take it," Vance remarked to Caddy. "Unless you want to get back home in a hurry to start going through those files."

Caddy shot an appraising look in Voegel's direction. "I guess it might not be a bad idea for me to stick around for a bit." He said after a moment's thought. "Just as a precaution."

"Well, I don't want to pull this stunt right after Proteus leaves the room," Vance remarked, and glanced at the shapeshifter. "Voegel doesn't know what you can do, but I don't want him putting two and two together."
Proteus nodded. "I'll go over to the next room. Your boys should have breakfast coming any minute now--we can wait until after everybody's eaten."
Vance half-smiled and glanced at Caddy. "Well, you'll get to enjoy the fruits of Nate's KP experience while you're waiting, anyway."

Caddy grinned crookedly. "I knew this whole underground-resistance gig was going to start paying off if I just stuck to it long enough."

"Don't look forward to it until you've tried it," Vance retorted, and gestured discreetly for the little group to break up.
"Okay," he said aloud to Proteus, for Voegel's benefit. "You'd better go on home. We'll hold down the fort here."
Proteus inclined his head. "Good luck," he said wryly, and went out.
Vance turned to Voegel. "Too bad he's gonna miss the show. We've got a little surprise for you after breakfast."

Voegel's expression twisted into a disdainful scowl. "Going to bring your telepath back for another round?" He asked, "Or do you have another freak lined up this time?"

Vance chuckled. "We'll have to tell our other guest you called him that--but you'll just have to wait and see who it is." He sat down at the table, folding his arms.
"Tell me something, Voegel. What is it in particular that makes you, personally, want to use human beings for lab rats?"

Voegel rolled his eyes and gingerly shifted position. "If you're planning on talking me into seeing the error of my ways, mutie, save us both the time."

Vance cracked a smile in Daws' direction. "Sounds familiar, doesn't it?"
He shrugged and stretched, reaching into his pocket for a cigar. "It doesn't matter, anyway. You're not gonna get the chance to do what you were planning."

Voegel smiled flatly. "I'm one man, mutie." He replied. "One man, even one clinic, doesn't make a difference. You can kill me, but you can't stop what we're doing."
His smile took on a nasty edge. "And even if you do -- you can't stop everyone who tries the same thing. You're fighting a losing war."

Vance raised an eyebrow. "Funny thing about that argument, Voegel. It's the same thing we believe about what we're fighting for."
Before the scientist could reply, there was a coded tapping at the door, and it opened to admit Nate and Handy. They were carrying plates of sausage, scrambled eggs, and biscuits.
"Breakfast is served," Nate announced brightly.

Daws grinned and moved to give Nate a hand with his burden. "This is a pretty impressive spread, especially given the surroundings."

"You learn to make do in my old career," Nate retorted, setting a plate down on the bed beside Voegel.
Major Vance cleared his throat. "Did our other guest have any breakfast?"
Nate took the cue. "Oh, well, he wasn't exactly in any mood to eat. We left his plate there for him, but..." He shrugged. "He's still too fighting-mad."

"Hasn't calmed down much from earlier, then?" Daws chuckled. "I guess I'm not surprised -- he didn't strike me as the sedate type."
Voegel shifted on the bed, clearly listening in to the conversation -- although he was trying to appear as disinterested as possible.

Vance gave the scientist a smirk as he sat down with his own plate of breakfast. "Well, you may be just one man, Voegel, but in a little bit you'll have some company--and I wonder if you'd call him 'just one man'." He glanced at Caddy. "Thanks for helping us deal with that little problem with him. It doesn't look like it'll give us any more trouble."
