Caddy glanced up from his eggs. "Oh -- sure, no problem. Just, y'know, remember what I told you about the . . ." He waved one hand in a vague gesture that might have been interpreted in any of a dozen ways. "That should take care of it."
Voegel shifted and scowled at Vance. "What are you playing at, mutie?"

Vance grinned wickedly behind his mask. "You just stew on that question for a little bit."

Voegel rolled his eyes. "Cute." He muttered, settling back against the pillows. "I'm glad you're so amused at your own theatrics."
Daws grinned wickedly. "Don't knock 'em. They've done us a lot of good in the past."

"Considering you'd like to make us extinct, you can't blame us for at least enjoying watching you squirm a little," Vance remarked shamelessly.

Voegel made a scoffing noise. "Your extinction isn't on my agenda, mutie." He replied. "You're too useful for that."

Vance's eyes and voice abruptly hardened. "Yeah... and that makes you even worse."
He pushed aside his plate and stood up. "I'm gonna go see about our other guest. I'd say it's about time we brought him over." He turned to Daws. "C'mon if you want to--it smells in here."

"You don't have to ask me twice." Daws shot a disgusted look at Voegel and rose as well.

Together Vance and Daws stepped outside, and went to the room nextdoor. There they found Proteus alone, calmly eating his own breakfast.
"I'll be as ready as I can be in a few minutes," the shapeshifter said. "Just don't be surprised if Voegel doesn't buy it. I didn't get to watch Doctor G nearly long enough at the clinic--and that crack on the head right afterward didn't do me any favors, either."

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "It's worth trying, anyway." She said. "Maybe the shape he's in will make him a little easier to deceive."

"You rested up pretty well?" Vance asked.
"Yeah. I'm good for a couple of days." Proteus frowned. "Major... what are you planning to do with Voegel when you've gotten all you can out of him?"
Vance sighed. "A bargain's a bargain, Proteus. I don't guess we have any choice but to turn him loose."

Daws grimaced. "The trick is going to be making sure he doesn't learn anything useful to tell the cops -- or his bosses."

"We've done all we can on that count," Vance sighed. "If the MCF really isn't a con job by these creeps, maybe they'll get the blame, and our own little social club won't be noticed."
He raised an eyebrow. "Come to think of it, a ransom note or two might just help that idea along."

"It isn't a bad idea." Daws said thoughtfully, folding her arms. "If it is Voegel's bosses behind the MCF, a ransom note for their own guy with their phony organization's name on it might be enough to rattle them a little, if nothing else."

"We'll work on that later." Vance turned to Proteus, noting that the shapeshifter had finished eating. "Ready to pull off this gag?"
Proteus shrugged and stood up. He stood deep in thought for a moment, recalling the details of Doctor G's appearance from their brief encounter at the clinic; and then he morphed into a facsimile of the mutant scientist.
"Have I hit the mark?" he asked Daws wryly, in an imitation of Doctor G's voice.

Daws smiled flatly. "Looks like the genuine article to me." She replied. "Albeit a little less murderous."

"Just act mean and incredibly arrogant, and you should have it covered." Vance frowned thoughtfully at Proteus. "I'm sorry this won't be too comfortable--but you know we'll have to tie you up. And wrap your hands up too, like we're trying to keep you from putting off any of that poison G has."
Proteus smiled crookedly. "Don't worry about me. I've put up with a lot worse for smaller stakes than this."
"Okay." Vance turned to rummage in the bags at one side of the room, at last producing a wad of thick plastic bags and a coil of rope. Then he glanced at Daws. "Wanna give me a hand with this, Regina?"

Daws nodded and moved to take the plastic bags from Vance, then turned to Proteus with a wry shrug. "Guess it makes the most sense to wrap your hands first and then tie the rope over 'em."

Proteus nodded, and patiently crossed his hands behind his back, turning to await the bindings.
"I don't guess I'll be saying much," he mused. "Unless Voegel starts in on some conversation himself."

Daws nodded, swaddling Proteus' hands in plastic. "Doctor G. didn't really strike me as the chatty type. If we'd captured the genuine article, I get the feeling he'd spend most of the time seething at us without saying much."

"That I can do," Proteus remarked.
Major Vance moved in behind the shapeshifter's other shoulder, uncoiling the rope. "You hold the plastic, Regina. I'll tie it."
"Not too tight, if you don't mind," said Proteus. "It only has to look good--not pass Voegel's personal inspection. If there's any trouble, I'd just as soon like to be able to slip free."
Vance paused abruptly, blinking.
"I wonder if that might be a useful idea too, later on..."
