Daws grimaced faintly. "I don't envy you the experience any. This kind of warfare is more than enough for my tastes."

"I'm lucky," Nate remarked grimly. "I never came close to anything as rough as Dad did."
He slipped his gun into his pocket, and kept his hand there as he began walking toward the doors of the apartment building's front lobby.
"Generally speaking, what kinda layout does this place have?" he asked Daws.

"Pretty straightforward." Daws replied. "Lobby on the first floor, stairs and elevators going up at the back, super's apartment in the North corner. One central hallway per floor, with apartments opening directly off it. Of course, they're all boarded up, but we could fix that easily enough."

"We may wanna think about sticking to the ground floor," Nate mused. "We had enough trouble with heights getting away from Voegel's apartment. Staying low might make it easier for the baddies to get away--but if things go south, it'll mean the same thing for us."

Daws nodded. "In that case, the super's apartment would be a good place for us to work out of -- it should have an alley door if we need to bail out the back."
She moved to the front doors of the building, which were secured with a thick chain and padlock, and withdrew her lockpicks from her coat. "Should be able to draw the bad guys into the lobby easy enough, if they take the bait."

While Daws was picking the lock, Nate pried off two boards that were nailed across the elevator doors, and forced the doors open. He took out a flashlight and looked up and down, examining first the underside of the elevator that was stopped two floors up, and then the bottom of the shaft at the basement level below.
He let out a low whistle. "Well, that might be kinda promising for a trap."

Daws grinned wickedly as she pulled the padlock free of the chain and pushed the door open. "At the risk of making a truly awful pun -- it'd give us a chance to get the drop on them. Take the high ground."

"Just as long as we can keep the teleporter from pulling anybody out of there," Nate mused. "Here's hoping Caddy has some luck with that power-dampening stuff."

"Yeah -- it might mean the difference between us winning this fight or not."
Daws shoved open the door to the superintendent's apartment, grimacing faintly at the sound of rats scurrying away from the noise. In the dim light filtering from the doorway and the boarded-up windows, it was possible to see a few sticks of moldering abandoned furniture, covered with a layer of dust and grime. "Home sweet home."

Nate shone his flashlight into the room. "Like I said, I saw worse in Iraq. Long as nobody's hiding in there with a gun, I'm happy..."
He flicked his light around the walls, looking for light switches and electrical outlets. "I wonder if we can rig up some temporary electricity. Being able to see the bad guys'd help--and if they're supposed to figure we're using this place for a hideout, they'll probably expect it anyway."

"Shouldn't be too difficult to tap into the main." Daws shrugged, nudging an overturned and broken wooden chair with one toe. "Worse comes to worst we could always bring in a generator."

"Shouldn't come to that. Dad's got some real electrical wizards on hand--we do that kinda thing all the time." Nate smirked. "I'm sure Mayor Cole wouldn't appreciate that we're freeloading electricity, but we got a job to do."
He moved over to examine the cracked window. "Same dilemma here as with the room itself. Do we want to set this up as an escape route for ourselves--knowing the bad guys might be able to use it too?"

Daws rubbed thoughtfully at the back of her neck. "I think we'd better. Considering what our little encounter in Voegel's apartment was like, I'd rather not get anybody backed into a corner by these people -- even if it does mean giving them a possible out."

"Noted." Nate continued to shine his flashlight around the room, examining the floor and ceiling as well as the walls.
"Oughta check out the floor. A booby-trap that drops into the basement might be fun, just like with the elevator. And if we can get the drop on anybody from above... Hmm. I think Dad's got a wall-crawling gecko-girl he can put on the team."

"A place like this, punching through the floor ought to be pretty easy." Daws shot a wry look at the crumbling plaster and the large cracks in the ceiling. "And a wall-crawler would come in handy, so long as she's prepared for it if part of the wall comes away under her."
