"I'll be generous and believe you," Vance replied. "What did he say would happen when he delivered our message?"

"Said someone'd come and find me." Daws replied. "Of course, that was if they liked the offer. If they didn't . . . well, he was vague. But unpleasantness was sort of more or less heavily implied."

"Hmm." Vance frowned. "I don't care for that caveat, but at least now we've got a possibility of meeting someone worth talking to. You mind taking the risk?"

Daws shrugged broadly. "Any day of the week I could get exposed by Tiernan as a double-agent and killed in an awfully painful manner. What's one more risk?"

"Alright. But I want you to keep me posted--and if you run into any trouble, call me quick." Vance shrugged. "I don't think the Spooks'd find any reason to harm you, but let's be ready for anything."

Daws nodded. "Sounds like a sensible plan to me." She shrugged. "Well, obviously my brilliant follow-the-Spook plan was a bust. Now what?"

"Seeing as how my people sorta wore out their welcome trying to sneak into Spooktown, I think the sensible thing is to wait and see what comes of that contact you made tonight," Vance replied. "Remember, we didn't have anything to offer 'em until you volunteered your money from Tiernan, so we didn't even get that far. I think we've piqued their curiosity now."

"Let's hope we've piqued it in the way that isn't gonna end up causing someone serious bodily harm, then." Daws replied.
By now the two had worked their way back to Lusus Naturae. Daws gave a shrug. "Well, that was rather a short evening."

"I guess it'll take time to see if we accomplished anything." Vance shrugged. "I can take you home, or back to your office."

"Too late to go back to the office." Daws replied. "Even private eyes gotta sleep sometime. You could drop me by my apartment, if you don't mind."

Vance inclined his head. They walked to the car and set off on their way to Daws' apartment.
"I hope you don't think this is a wild goose chase," he remarked. "If we can just make the right connections, I'm certain the Spooks'll be a lotta use to us."

"Oh, I believe that." Daws grinned lopsidedly. "Don't mind me -- my professional pride just gets a little scraped when someone manages to lose me like that. Gimme a night's sleep and I'll be my old bright-eyed self."

"That's good to know." Vance rubbed his jaw. "And I think that's the last time I try to sneak into Lusus Naturae. Too risky. We're just lucky none of Nocturne's crew were around."

"We were, at that." Daws admitted. "Guess we'll just have to find some other place next time we wanna spend our Friday night mingling with the local color."
She shrugged as they pulled up in front of her apartment building. "Well, I guess that calls it a night."

"I guess so." Vance looked at Daws gravely. "You remember what I said. Call for me the second you even think you're gonna need some help."

Daws nodded. "I will." She slid out of the car and smiled. "Thanks for the ride. Take care of yourself."

"Same to you, detective," the Major replied, and drove off into the night.
